Sorry to hear about your friend. I have only had one experience with a weim. Elderly shooter, overweight papered house dog. Pleasant dog happy to be along. We had gotten into a covey of quail and scattered them, stopped in a spot slicker than a billard table, weim standing right next to me breathing like a freight train, strategy for following up singles was discussed at length, mostly to give our senior members a breather. All other dogs gone in search of quail. After about 10 minutes, I look down at this weim. girl because she's kinda leaning on me and hasn't moved except the heavy breathing. she's on point, not only that but I can see the quail not 5 foot from all 4 of us. Yes you guessed it by now we are all so rattled, ( I don't think any of us believed that she would actually point, including the dottering owner), bird gets up flys straight away, through a volley of shots, unscathed. I never under-estimated her again. Saw her trundle along and pick up birds other good dogs missed, ( some of them mine). Sure was funny to see her with 6 oz. quail in her mouth, she must have weighed 80 #s or so. Only excercise she got was in and out the back door of a patio home, save the 6 or quail hunts per year. Owner proud as a peacock, I have to admit that I figured someday I would have to carry her out of the field, it never happened, but I sure would have felt she deserved the courtesy if it had come to that.
