New Dog Breeds

Gove County Britts started a thread in the Lounge forum about a crossbred litter of pups that came from the union of an English Setter and a Vizsla. They reported that the pups were excellent hunters, and they were considering the development of a new breed. Many people weighed in with a full spectrum of opinions. The Westminster Kennel Club dog show is now on and features two entirely new breeds. The Brittany was developed by cross breeding two distinct breeds. Thus, I give full encouragement to Gove County Britts to develop a new breed of hunting dog. I point out again the role of geographic place-names used in naming dog breeds: Brittany (a province of France where they were developed), German Shorthairs, French Poodles, English and Irish Setters, Cumberland Sheepdogs, Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, et al. So Gove County Britts would be carrying on a long tradition if they called the new breed Gove Pointers, Grainfield Setters, or the like.

thank you for the encouragement although you did have the breeds wrong it was an enlish pointer not a setterand as for the name again thank you for the name suggestions but we have settled on highplains pointers and again thank you for bieng in my corner on this

I know I'm not speaking for everyone but I think what I was trying to get across, and I think most everyone else was too, is that Gove County's "new breed" was a complete fluke. It was an accident. His neighbors dog jumped a fence and mated with his female that was in heat. I don't think that everyone is against a new breed they just want it done proffesionally. This litter ended up great but is he really dedicated to developing this new breed or is it just going to fall in the dirt? He can't just continue breeding this pair and expect to create a new breed with a limited lineage of dogs.

Most times when a new breed is going to be developed the process is thought out and planned. Now I know that a new breed has to start somewhere but I doubt most of them have been accidents. Hopefully if Gove County does decide he wants to develop these dogs he can handle it professionally and is dedicated to the work.

Kansashunting your right we should handle it with the profesionalism that it needs that is why we have been waying out the pros and cons of our ddecisions and we have done our homework on both sides of the involved breeds we are only going to select from the best bloodlines we can find

Is there a need to start a new breed of hunting dog? There are some breeds that can handle waterfowl, upland, and blood trail big game all in the same day. There are breeds that fit any specific need already. No real need for a new breed. Unless your new breed can speak English and tell me if its a rooster or hen that he's pointing or cook or clean, I'm not interested.

No Prob

Your post is humorous, but I don't agree. There is always room for improvement. I don't care about the specifics of GCB's plan. If he creates a great new breed of dog, more power to him. I don't want to get into ethics or professionalism b/c I don't know the guy personally or anything about his operation. However, my best bird dog came from a similar accident. My grandpa wanted to terminate the lives of the pups, but I didn't. He thought he would give me a Charlotte's Web type of lesson and let me have the pups. I found 2 guys that had GSP/Brit crosses in the past and they were willing to give me $100 for 2 of the pups. They'd seen parents out of each bloodline before and had owned cross-bred pups before. Neither of the parents were registered that I know of (I was 11).

I kept 2 dogs. One didn't like guns so much and took to being a great pet. The other hunted for me and thought on a level that I've yet to see in any of the pure-breds I've owned since (GWP, GSP, and Brits). I'm glad he decided to teach me a "hard" lesson about life b/c I had a near "perfect" bird dog for about 10 good years.

I'd love to see a new breed intentionally derived from the best of GSP and Brit bloodlines.....I can't provide justification or enough information to "prove" the need...I can only say that I'd happily buy one for my next dog.

There is not always room for improvement. You shoot 25/25, there is no room for improvement. What your talking about is a mix and not a new breed. What is the best of a GSP and Brit going to do? You aren't going to get superdog. You want the best dogs to hunt with go to the best breeders, no matter what breed, proven through decades of effort.

You aren't going to get superdog. \

Yes you can I found him at Ken's

Ive found several GSP/Brittany mix on petfinders... however i dont think you can get both species to perform all in one package.

I prefer a one breed dog. at least you know what to expect. If you want a dog to point and stay locked til you get there, get a GSP or a brittany or any kind of pointer. want a flusher, get a lab.

In GUN DOG magazines. i see far to often a person may have a English Setter to point and a lab to flush, or a brittany and a lab, or a GSP and a lab.

Ahhh, but what happens when you get your boot stuck in the mud:D. Back to the topic, if this is what your going to do good luck. Hope you find good homes for the dogs.
