New to the forum and looking at a trip to colorado near yuma possibly. I'm coming from utah and wondering if someone had some good spots that might be closer. Every hour not traveling is an hour hunting.

So this is gonna sound funny but there is a resident pheasant population in the White River Valley east of Meeker. Now don't take this for meaning the number you would see in Yuma, but I elk hunt in the northern Flat Tops Wilderness and always dump in at Ripple Creek Pass. I have seen many roosters picking up gravel on the roadsides on the way back and forth for supplies. Problem will be access as the north side of road is public south side (hay/milo) fields are private. Still say east is better but there are pheasants on that side of the hill. Rob
 
Also I have heard that there are pheasants around Delta. The only bird I ever saw on the west slope was at horsethief SWA near Junction
 
I should add that like the first response says, don't expect near the numbers as there are on the plains
 
In the 70's and early 80's there was pretty darn good hunting around Delta and Olathe, but it's all leased up now and there are fewer birds to boot. There are a few in the lower Grand Valley (like Horsethief), but not really worth the effort, I don't think. Never heard of the ones by Meeker, but don't doubt it. I think if I were you I'd be thinking more about Idaho if you're looking for a closer trip. Otherwise, if you're coming to eastern Colo (Denver and east), put in the extra hour or so and make it to the eastern tier of counties in Colo - there's a lot more birds than in the western edge of their range here. You might have an hour or two less time hunting, but you'll be in a bird population at least twice as dense! This is assuming you're looking for wild birds/unguided hunting.
 
If you wanna hunt truly wild roosters in CO in appreciable numbers, you gotta go as far east as it gets...Nothing else in the state even comes close!

Since you're coming out-of-state from Utah anyway, might want to try KS or border-hopping between the two while you're at it...
