Need Help with Picking a GWP

Looking to add a pointer cause the wife wants to join me and her dad and some hunts. Main reason for a GWP is more tolerant to colder temps, and a pointer cause the wife isnt sure footed to put it kindly. Any recommendations for breeders in the midwest? What lines, ackolades should I be looking for? I know with labs its hunt test and feild trials, but wasnt sure if thats what pointers owners run.

Thanks for help, Todd

Great Choice! I have owned GWP's for over 20 years. They do best in a home with a serious hunter, their one mission is life is to HUNT! Hope you do not have cats or at least can keep the dog away from them. I know Nebraska and South Dakota both have several fine breeders of GWP's. I would do my research and one thing I would make sure of is to see BOTH the parents in person, some wirehairs have a very skittish personality, and get be aloof and down right mean. Look for parents that are friendly to you, a stranger. GWP are know for their great nose and desire to hunt and please their owner. The ones I have owned have all been good waterdogs and retreivers. NAVHDA is one GWP orginization available. They need lots of field work to keep them occupied, but you will be rewarded greatly in the time you put into them, like you would with any breed. Good Luck !

I have a Drahthaar, which is the german version of the GWP and I could not be happier. The most talented dog I have ever hunted with. The kennel that I got him from is Vom Wiredhaus whichis in Sioux Falls. You will need to be aware of their desire to hunt including cats.

Life-long GWP owner and love them.

DD I have taken care of for a friend is a hunting machine, but has had some health issues...sort of one-thing-after-another deal. Might be just this dog, but had me wondering if the intensity of focus on game find/kill/drive has led some folks to neglect systemic health issues. Also, a liver dog with very tight hair, unlike my wirehairs. (Not arguing other's experiences.)

Best wishes, I think the GWP is the ideal combination of house/companion/hunting canine...for me at least.
