Nebraska

Are birds getting next to nothing here in Nebraska?

You will have to be a bit more specific. Are you a member of PF or QF? If not I have tons of Info about what's going on in Nebraska. As far as Quail is concerned only Mo, has more money being spent on habitat reform. Wait I maybe wrong, but I'll check the annual report that just got released this spring.
Mo chapters spent the most with Nebraska coming in #2. I'll have to dig it up.

A member of both, just seems like eastern half of the state there isn't much to hunt.

Birds

Hunted 30 yrs in north east part of the state, in the 80s, 90s it was the best.then the crp hit it's time and corn was on the rise, rent was higher than gov. Funds, and our farmers started taken the money for rent and the pheasants dwindled, one day corn will fall again and crp will hopefully come back.In my opinion no cover no birds.

You are spot on.:)

Tfmdl, you're being light on your feet with this one;)

As you know, it's not a opinion. Fact is if there's no cover there's no birds:(

So since I live in Eastern Neb, I should drive every weekend 5 hours to hunt?

You don't have to! You could quit, take up checkers, or help with habitat improvements, recruit some farmers, prepare for good weather, and better years, with habitat you supported, all made possible by you! Meanwhile, make some friends here, go 5 hours or where ever you have to, share the expense, a few times. Look at the Pennsylvania thread, good heaven they are making obvious improvement in a worse pheasant situation than we have in Nebraska.

Love the topic as this humble Kentuckian is a Husker to the core!
Grew up on the Prairie during the 70's and 80's....I've experienced excellent bird hunting and also have walked for days and never flushed a bird. Have seen 10+ covey days and so on.....

There is some good direction from jmac and O&N.....they both have boots on the ground.

With current conditions such as major habitat loss due to extensive farming, high grain prices and just now coming out of 2+'years of extreme drought.....the entire prairie is suffering in some way.....

Read some of the other posts on here and try traveling to different regions until you find good cover / habitat and then try to contact local landowners to gain permission.

Side note:
Kentucky is right up there with quail habitat projects and $$ spent....
Look up Peabody WMA (ken & Sinclair) units and you can read about large a scale habitat restoration and also see Shaker Village and their major quail project.

it will take lots of intervention....most of the state is farmed fence row to fence row, shelter belts were bulldozed years ago....:(

I think O&N did a nice job answering your question Upland4E. But personally, no, I would not drive 5 hours each weekend to hunt. A few times here and there? Sure I would. But not every weekend.

If it ever get's THAT bad I think I'd find a way to move to another area. Heck, as far as I'm concerned, I'd even take that wild pheasant infested area in Baja Mexico.:D Actually, now that I'm thinking about it:rolleyes:, Baja may be a tough sell for the wife. lol

Have a good night Upland4:cheers:

You sir are dead on balls right.

Help the habitat Improvements. You can't just take( means hunt and take birds) And to expect to have good hunting. You have to give back, pay forward, Or crap and get off the pot.

Old and new this is the best post ever on this sight. Hats of to you my friend.:10sign::cheers:
