my snow "hunt"

I too could not pass up fresh snow. As a nod to my wife's concern for my safety and in an effort to make the trip more appealing to my teenage sons, I didn't leave the house until about 10:00. The wife was satisfied, but the kids decided not to go anyway.

Regardless, I headed out with visions of perfect points and dead birds. Plan A was a WIHA I've hunted several times that always held birds. There were two trucks already there and one guy kneeling in the weeds blocking. Time to move on. The road to my plan B WIHA hadn't even been driven, so I was pretty sure I wouldn't find anyone there.

Sure enough I had it to myself. What do I discover in getting ready...I brought the shell box containing 20 gauge shells for the kids guns, not the 12 guage shells for my gun.

Couldn't let the dog down, so I carried an empty gun and we walked the field anyway. She rewarded me with a beautiful point on what turned out to be 6 hens sitting so close together they could have been a covey of quail.

Headed home after that, birdless and humbled by my own stupidity, but stillglad that I went.

Is this the time we all make it OK by saying it was good exercise?? :D:D
Bet it never happens again - until next time!

It will test several things most of us say once in a while:

"I just enjoy the fresh air and excercise"

"I just enjoy watching the dogs work"

"I'd hunt with a camera if they wouldn't let me use a shotgun"

Between the futility of having no ammo and a little time pressure to be on time getting home, I could not convince myself to walk a second field.

The 20 gauge shell box now has yellow tape on it and the 12 gauge shell box now has red and black tape on it.

I don't know if it will make you feel any better, but I went deer hunting a few years ago. Slept in a cold assed tent. Only to wake up at 5am and found I had the wrong rifle shells. :)

Dangit Matto! About making you feel better, you could've been stuck with me, my 2.5yo daughter and both boys in the Manhattan mall, K-mart, Petco, Hyvee, etc. instead of being in the field. See, it's already better isn't it:D

Seriously though, at least you and the dog got to see something before heading back:thumbsup:

Thought I was the only one to do that. For convenience, I keep a 20ga, a 12ga, and a deer hunt game bag---each with shells, a decent knife, some TP, etc When I go out, I just decide which shotgun, pick the bag, send the dog to the door, and head on out. I gots me a system. :)

Except, you really need the right shells for the shotgun being used. One time, I ended up asking another hunter (a stranger) if I could buy a couple of 12ga shells from him...he gave a strange look, and a couple of #5s.

These days, there are a handful of each guage shells in the door pockets.

duh.

stupid stuff

all this sound perfectly normal to me, after all, if any of us had any brains we would find something to do with our time beside being on this stupid forum

cheers

I picked up my buddy and drove 3 hours to hunt pheasants. He pulled out his shotgun and dropped a shell in the chamber only to have it slide through to the ground. Good thing a 410 shell doesn't stick in a 28ga. barrel. LOL, he didn't shoot any birds that day.

I went duck hunting one time and left my shotgun sitting in my kitchen. Dropped off the other guys and hurried back to get it. Never fired a shot that morning.

I was hunting in Kensington was bs with the guys at the gate we loaded up to stay the night at smith center realized I left my shotgun leaning against the fence post I said f&^% it it will be there in the morning lol it was  Another time I leaned my shotgun on the wheel of my truck and forgot about it ran over it it still shoots lol

Left my gun on top of suburban in quinter. Missed it about Russell. Was still on top when we stopped for a burger at Merediths. Never tried that trick again.

I drove from Branson mo (where I unfortunately lived for awhile) to Hutchinson ks for a weekend of hunting. My shotgun was still in Branson.:mad:

The first time I took my daughter out this season I was so focused on her that I forgot my shotgun. I was pulling out of the driveway when the lightbulb went on, and had to back all the way up to the garage and run in to get it. She thought it was hilarious, but the dogs were not impressed.

On last trip I took with my Dad(hospice now) to KS we pull over to boot up, get vest and guns out of bed of truck.
When he unzipped gun case he found his deer rifle. He would have been 77 or 78 at the time.
