My Pups First Pheasant.

Finally! And I do mean Finally. I must live in the worst Pheasant area in the States, NW Minnesota and public land non the less. After 6 hard trips to the field, my pup Elsie (13 mo. old) was finally rewarded for all of her hard work. I took a long, long, shot and dropped the bird, but I knew it would be a runner just because of the distance of the shot. We searched the area where the bird landed but to no avail. She even locked up once with a very intense point, but we kicked around and found nothing. So we started working the wind back and forth. I stayed on top of the hill close to where I marked the bird fall. I watched Elsie work the wind back and forth. Pretty soon she's over there, then she's way over here, then she's way, way over there. About the time I was going to call her back, thinking she was completely out of range for the bird, I should have known better, she suddenly got real birdy and I seen her lunge onto something. I realized she had the Pheasant trapped. I ran over to her and there she sat, literally holding the still alive bird down with her paws. I couldn't have been happier or more proud. Finally...Reward!!
So this is my brag post. Its my first Pheasant I've shot in over 15 years, my first bird dog, and her first wild bird.

Now that is the kind of story that keeps me checking this site every 10 minutes! Thanks for sharing and congratulations:cheers:

Nice work! Not many 13-month-old pups can track a cripple like that. You should be proud.

240, My Britts 1st Pheasant was quite similar. Only I missed a few before I hit one. He got to it after chasing it down, it was a little hot. He laid down next to the live bird panting hard, and put his paw on its' head. Then pushed the head down into the dirt. I know the rush you had with your dog for mine was really good......Bob

Congrats, what a great story with a great ending! Just gets us more excited about getting out. Can't hardly stand it. Good luck with the rest of the season.

Great story. Your first bird with a new pup is something you will never forget, It's like your first-----well, never mind.
One more thing " ALLWAYS TRUST YOUR BIRD DOG"

Awesome nice job. I remember my first dog and her first pheasant we got in Iowa. I shot one down in a CRP field, she went after it. She never put her nose down just took off running over the hill. I blew my whistle but she didn't come back. So I walked over the hill down the hill over the next hill heard some wings flapping and found her with the bird pinned down with her paws just as you described.

I guess we both learned a lot with that first bird. I learned to trust my dog.

Its become very obvious that her getting this bird was the best thing to ever happen to her as far as hunting goes.
We were out yesterday and she was an absolute pointing fool! She covers alot of ground in a hurry, and she bumped a couple hens right off the bat. I sat her down and told her "you are a pointer, you are not a flusher. I want a pointing dog, now start pointing!"
Presto! The lightbulb really came on. Three birds in a row and all on solid points!
I think I'm going to end up with a pointing dog!

LMAO!!!!!! Good one!

Thats so awesome. It seems like once a dog tracks down its first crippled bird it grows up fast.:10sign:

It reminds me of my first dog and her first wild pheasant because it was so similar. She was 18 months old and the first morning we hunted in Iowa the dogs found a rooster. I shot it she took off running with her head up and ran way over the hill. Since she had her head up I didn't know what to think so I blew my whistle for her to come back. Well she kept going. I walked over the hill down the hill over the next hill and got just over the crest of the hill and I heard wings flapping she too had the bird pinned down.

My dog learned a lot that day and I learned a lot about my dog. I learned to trust my dog.;)
