My last hunt of the season

Took the Friday before off work and was planning on hunting my older pointer locally and then taking my younger one down South to a 1200 acre farm a friend owns that hadn't been quail hunted for years. Well, as it turned out the weather was forecasted to be crummy Saturday, which it was so I thought I may as well get the young dog out on Friday instead and if the weather cooperated Saturday I would just take them both South with me.

Friday I didn't get up and around too early, kind of lounged around the house with the better half talking about how her crummy boss of 10 yrs told her she was no longer a good "fit" for the dental office and was let go. 26 yrs in this same office and 10 with the current dentist and all of the sudden things aren't working out? Really? Oh well, it was for the better as she is now with a fantastic dentist making more than she was at the other office. So, back to the story.

Headed South of the house a ways. First spot was a spot I hadn't hunted this year. Last year there was a nice covey on it but I just couldn't find them this time. So on to the second spot. This one usually has 3 nice coveys. Found a single but I didn't kill it. Opting instead to just take a photo and not a very good one at that. I gotta start taking the wifes camera with me!

Second spot he found a nice covey right away. Worked on them for a bit. Didn't take any photo's as I was trying to get him to stay in the area to find singles which he did very well. Killed a couple over him but mostly just let him do some bird work. He did retrieve both birds which was good for him to get some feathers in his mouth for his work.

After some of that action we went on. I came across a neat, old fence post I thought would be nice to use for some photos so I took a couple of birds out of my vest and started arranging them for photos.

So while I am doing this Obie is off to parts unknown. I get a beep and vibrate that he is on point 100 yards to the West. I look to my left and sure enough there he is. Statue like in front of some sort of thicket, may have been sumac not sure. So I let him stand there thinking this will be good for him and continue to take some more photos before walking down to him.

Get down to him and figure that anytime now a big covey is going to explode out of this unknown type of thicket. No birds! So I stand real quiet thinking I'll hear them but nothing. I leave him there and walk around the thicket and nothing. I walk a bit further out into the grass and all of the sudden woosh flutter flutter there they are! Sorry Obie for not trusting your nose but I though for sure you were just full of poo but I promise next time to look a little further out before I tell you that you are full of it.

Was a great ending to the season. Only a couple of covies but some valuable dog work took place and I was able to provide my mother in law some fine eating which she always appreciates.

Here's to a great quail season and I sure hope that next year is as good or better than this year was!

Got to trust the one with their nose down to the ground:) Glad you had a chance to get out one last time before the season officially shut down.

Duck, a nice end to the season. I enjoyed your posts and photos over this past season. See you later in the year with more good hunting stories.
