My First O/U, need help with chokes

Just bought myself my first over/under and was wondering what chokes to put into the barrels. it is a Yildiz ME Special 28in barrel, 12 ga. I have 5 chokes, cyl., imp cyl., mod., imp. mod. and full. I will be hunting pheasants in N.W. Kansas in the second week of November.

Any help would be much appreciated.

If you're going to be hunting over good pointers, I'd say cyl/mod. If not, then IC/Mod or IC/IM.

If you're hunting unhunted fields for the first time this season, cyl. and IC might be fine. But if your shots are longer, IC & mod. is probably your best combo. I shoot IC & Mod. about all season. You've got lots to choose from so you can stick an extra choke in your pocket if you feel like you need to tighten or loosen.

also remember that if you shoot steel it patterns tighter then lead so remember that. I only shoot steal since alot of the land I hunt is WPA land and requires it..therefore I use wider choke tubes than I normally would If I am shooting lead. All in all just swing and shoot..I find that a choke rarely makes the shot..I am either dead on..or missing horribly :)

I use skeet and modified most of the time. If the birds are getting out further, IC and modified.

Unfortunately we won't have any dogs this year. We will be hunting some private land and some wiha. There will be 5 of US hunting. Should I put the tighter choke on my second shot for more distance.

Also what are the benefits of using steel shot over lead, last year I used Remington pheasant loads 2 3/4 5 shot because my Beretta only shot 2 3/4. Should I switch to 3 inch now that I can shoot them???

I really appreciate y'all s help on this.

TexanKevin,

I'm heading up to Kansas from Austin on Nov 14th. I usually use an IC for the 1st shot and IM for the second. I hunt over my Lab that works pretty close.

I also unfortunately have a recent knee injury that may make me the official blocker, does that change what I should use???

Sorry I'm the new guy, lol

Go out to Elm Fork and shot the wobble trap out there. Try the gun with the ammo you will be using with the different chokes..

Oh man you are missing out. It's like a gun club without the membership. They have skeet, trap, wobble trap, five stand, and 2 sporting clay courses. It's pricey but worth it. Before I moved from Frisco to Austin we would go every other weekend...

It's a skeet thrower that is ground level that wobbles left to right so you don't know where the bird is going to flush...

With wild Pheasants you really don't know what your going to get as far as distance. You could get a bunch of birds that fly up your pant legs or you can get some wild busting birds that have been shot at once or twice. I would tend to error on the side of being choked for a longer shot as you can always wait on a close flush. Better to be over choked than under choked in this case. I would go with IC/Mod as an all around combination.

Sounds like good people to know. We are doing the public route. It's going to be my first time in Kansas and I can't wait!
