My 14th year hunting out by Dodge City, KS. Goes by too quick every year..

This was my 14th year to hunt out by Dodge City, KS. So after my 3 1/2 day hunting trip to southwest Kansas, we had a great time. Got to eat at the newly built Bad Habit Sports Bar (good steak, better than the old Bad Habit, thanks Angie), stayed at the Super 8 motel (probably the best place I have stayed at in Dodge for the price, just need somwehre to wash clothes) and I do recommend them, very good folks, good rooms, they take pets ($25 pet fee), decent parking.

My 11yr old son had a blast...he swears he shot two cockbirds but that he credits dad finishing them off.

He tells it that he wounded or "rocked em" and that I finished them off.

I will say that he shot alot of shells. I think I will give him some 7 1/2s next time.

He did have a lot of chances with some awesome flushes right in front of him...just not real quick on the draw.

He walked some, however he loves blocking!! Funny, he figured out the game real quick. After I said, hey lets walk this corner out or lets hit that bit of cover or get the dogs over there or when a dog would go on point or the dogs are getting birdy, he would follow right along and pretty soon he was saying those things....

One time, he said dad I am going to stay in the truck. I was like okay, well we hit this tree, pit, area that is surrounded by all sorts of crops. Man, I lost count of how many birds I saw. I didn't get to many good shots due to trees and safety...however my son heared the shooting and came out of the truck and was walking outside of the area as birds were flying right at him!!!

They were going pretty fast due the windy conditions...after that he didn't want to stay in the truck much. In fact...I had to PRY him out of the field to get back in the truck at times so we could go on to the next field.

He slept like a baby when we got back, took a little to get him up, however he did. He is hooked and he can't wait until we go again.

I love the fact that I have a son who enjoys it as much as I do and who I can take. And maybe one of these days he will take his son (my grandson).....who knows...

If only the weather would cooperate more (had temps in the 70s on Friday and Sunday, but we still saw and shot birds)

Thanks for the story. We are going to have our first grandchild in Feb & we know it will be a grandson so I'm looking forward to reliving my son's and my first hunts. Last week I wanted to buy him a BB gun but his Mother and Grandmother both think he needs a red wagon first. Well he will be born in only 3 months so he may need both real soon. He already has a cathers mitt and a 410 waiting on him.

Happy for you guys!!! Boy do I remember those days with my sons & all their friends - they turned into a bunch of hunting beasts from about that age till girls & cars really kicked in - so enjoy to the max every minute while you can!

My sons & I still hunt together as equal adults now that they're both in their 20's (and that's really nice in it's own way too), but it's not quite the same as those just-me-&-my-dad sidekick days...I'm dyin for a grandkid to do it with someday! ;)

It sounds like you had a great time in Kansas with your son. Memories come flooding back of some of my first hunts with my Dad in northern Illinois on a farm near Byron some 50 years ago when I was nine. I was able to tag along at a young age but cannot remember when I first got to bring a gun, but sometime around 10/11 give or take. It was a youth modified very light H & R single shot 20G that kicked like a mule. My shoulder felt much better after we got a Fox 410 side by side and I did bag some pheasants with that--but not very many.

What gun was your son "rocking" them with?

My wife and I don't have kids so I try to bring other folks into the world of pheasant hunting and continue to introduce my labs to the sport-now with #4 and #5. I hope that you and your son can spend many days together in the field as I cherish those memories with my Dad, gone now for two years.

Good call on the catcher's mitt! I have my two year old boy swinging left handed (even though he's a righty) and I've told my wife he'll catch growing up. I bought him a toy over/under last summer and he loves it. When you pull the trigger it sounds like a shotgun and it even has play shotgun shells.

Great story. I love takin my kids hunting. Got the 14 yr old girl hooked, and startin on the 6 yr old boy last year has him wanting to go all the time.

@Crusader & KsGSP - Outfielder ain't a bad choice for a young boy to shine either if he's got wheels at a time when otherwise anything over the infield is usually just another automatic base cleaner & the coach's son and his other team favorite are always gonna play pitcher & SS anyway...Taught my oldest this trick early-on & he became a star center fielder and lead-off hitter all the way thru HS & college!

Got old pics of both my sons holding a cork-gun in one hand & a prize duck or quail in the other barely out of diapers (they rode in the truck & drove it in my lap too on old dirt roads & pasture trails, hung around camp & sat in a blind with me from that time on)...They graduated to the real thing with ease! ;)
