Murdo, SD

There are a few birds on private land near Murdo (I hunt by Okaton). But, like jB said, Presho and east is much better habitat.

For many years we used to shoot prairie dawgs outside of Murdo, never saw many pheasants...has to be better places to go....maybe things changed in the last decade. Good luck.
Edit ... The only time I ever saw many pheasants in our travel of SD for prairie dawgs was near Gregory....if I was goings to SD for pheasants with my limited knowledge, that is where I would start....or where the most public ground was....or where you can get permission.

Very few public areas near Gregory, Dallas, or Colome. There's a few north of Winner, but heavily hunted..

Not much public around Murdo. And, what's there is actually more deer country than birds.
Agree...if you can find private land (probably a charge) there could be birds. I hunted in that area 10 years ago (private) and did well. However, it seemed to dry up so we went east.

Thx everyone. Murdo is where we are staying. I'm going to hunt and my son is going to hike the parks to the west. I should have stated that my plan is likely to drive east back to the normal spots but thought I would take a shot that I may not have to dry that far. Thanks again!

At least Murdo has some motels. I think Hutch's cafe and motel in Presho have closed. Whenever I hunted there, the morning breakfast and evening hamburger steak's at Hutch's were great. There is a big GPA north of town (Fait dam) that used to be ok. When the WIA's full of CRP went away, it went downhill fast.

I can't recommend a place to hunt, but your post took me back a few years when I found myself on a solo trip with my Lab. On the second day of my 9-day trip, I stepped in a gopher hole and wrench my back. I decided I would take a rest day the third day of my trip to see the black hills, rushmore, and the bad lands.. So, I headed west at sundown, and stayed in hot springs, SD that night. The next day headed back east and took in Wind Cave NP, Custer State Park, Rushmore and Badlands NP. I wanted to hunt the Fort Pierre National Grasslands before arriving back in Mitchell.

Well, when I tell you Mudro has nothing to eat on Sundays nights, I am not kidding. even the subway shop in the gas station was closed after 6:00 pm.

Anyway, the only place I could find to stay in Murdo was this little gem. the proprietors were nice, the rooms were warm, and the shower was hot. It's not the worst place i've ever stayed, but i dont know that I will ever have occasion to lay over in Murdo again.

There is a Super-8 next to I-90 and a Best Western in Murdo, as well as a Range Country Inn. Were these open?

There are lots of motels in Murdo - just google the town and a flock of them will appear, although some are not open after the first of the year. On the west edge of town there's a restaurant - Buffalo House? we found was the best.
