Anyone running dogs this wknd at the Mn State Pheasant Championship? I will be running my puppy dixie in the open doubles with a friend. It will be my, and the pups, first NATHA tournament. I am looking forward to it but I am sure I will feel a bit overwhelmed with it being my first time.

It was at the MN Horse & Hunt Club.. It was a pretty cool event. It was my first tournament ever and I have to say it is quite the adrenaline rush. Dixie (my 8th month old pup) and I placed 2nd overall in the Amateur Flusher division. It was pretty awesome! I was just happy to compete and had no expecations of being in contention. What a cool event. I will def be looking into more hunting tournaments in the future. They are a blast!

sounds like fun. So do you think Horse and Hunt is a worthy investment? I am about 50 min away and not as close as you. I am constantly on the fence about checking it out. The idea of being able to take the dog out anytime is very appealing. I am hoping they might have a deal at pheasant fest.

For me it was..I looked at the cost of membership as an investment in my pup and as an extension of my own property. If you break it down its about 100 bucks a month..but gives you access to use about 100 acres whenever you want. If it wasn't so close I am not so sure I would pay the high membership fee. I would likely join Caribou or a similar club that was less expensive. But the fact that I am 15 minutes from it and i could go home from work, pick my dog up and go train her every day for an hour or 2 and buy birds or scratch hunt just made it all worth it. Another option is to get involved in a breed club. I joined the Lake Country Retriever Club and thru my membership there (45 bucks a year) They secure training accesss at several places including the HHC. Additionally they do hunt tests and trials and it seems to be a great place to meet like minded dog folks and learn from some very serious and seasoned dog trainers.

Looks like you are on the north side of the Twin Cities. I livein Ramsey and run up to Glendorado for a half day fairly often. They have good birds and cover. Plus you don't need to have a membership. They sometimes run a prebuy special where you can buy a bunch of birds at the beginning of the season and then use them when you want.

Over the years I have used several hunt clubs around the TC area, including the Horse and Hunt Club.

The best hunting topography/conditions, for me, is Major Ave. at Delano. for those of us on the west side it's about 45 minutes.

If you use the resident trainer, you can utilize their fields to train - free. At least it was 6 years ago.

Most of the land (600) acres is grass, a few lakes and waterways and food plots. All of it is in CRP and Federal set aside - no trees.

I believe the member fee is $400 per and you can bring guests no charge.

I found it's a good investment and training site for my young dog.

Go to "MN Horse and Hunt" and click on NATHA. this site has many of the hunt championships and host a few at their club.

Good Luck!
