Mixed Bag

Went out for awhile today and came home with a mixed bag. I jumped the drake on a dug out. He suprised me and I took a long shot. I only winged him and he went down in the weeds on the other side of the mound. I saw my young Brittany Elle headed in that direction but couldn't see her because she was hidden by the dirt mound. Wasn't long before she came out with the drake still alive with it's head held high. First duck for Elle.

Funny how dogs always look like you are punishing them when trying to get them to pose for a picture.

sweet, good looking dogs:thumbsup::cheers:

Give Elle a Milk Bone for me, she did well on her 1st duck retrieve. Gotta love those Brittany's they know how to get the job done. That look's like a good day hunting, kudo's to you and Elle........Bob

Was hunting geese on the Yellowstone river in December, Big chunks of ice coming down the river, shot a goose, my lab went out after it, big chunk of ice table size hit him and pushed him under water.:rolleyes: He came back to shore dazed. Could not get him to go out again. Finally shot another and he was reluctant to retrieve it. :( Started throwing sticks out to perk his interest. Stick landed on the goose, he went out and got the stick and left the goose. :eek: To make things worse partners short hair went out in the river and retrieved the goose. :eek:

DonC hope your labs doing better after that experience! Neat story on the Short hair retrieving the goose:thumbsup: I had a friend that brought his Short Hair on a late season Duck hunt a few years back too. My experience wasn't so good though. We were on a deep open water pond. The hunt was unfortunately cut short because the dog was so cold after a quick retrieve with our labs that he literally was slow to respond to commands 20-30 minutes later and wouldn't stop shivering!:eek: It really upset me that the owner insisted his Short Haird would be fine with swimming then standing still in sub-zero temps as we waited on ducks. He really put his dog at risk for no reason.:mad: That was the last of that. ;)--1pheas4

George,
That Mallard looks huge.

Chase has that same "punsihed" look in his hero shot on my last P.E on another forum, of a grouse hunt.

grouse in pond:

damned if he didn't do a water retrieve:

Chase usually won't even pick up a grouse on dry land (too fluffy)

hero (punished) shot after rtrv.:

pointed one more bird (& retrieved it) & here is the take for that day & a contented dog:

happy dog overall:

It was a large northern mallard. Nice and fat, and not a pin feather to be found.

What make and gauge is your SxS? I picked up a BSA Classic 16 ga. SxS this summer and have used it quite a bit this fall.
