I am an OLD Minnesota pheasant hunter. We hunted around Montivedio and other Western towns. Has anyone hunted there this year. I am about ready to give up on SD and try MN again.:)

Welcome back Bruce, dont know much about Minnesota but good luck. You could come to California and not shoot just as many as you didn't get in SD.:D

Thanks Quail Hound

It's great to be back. :) Yes, I could do as well in CA or even better:D I have been searching the web re. MN pheasant hunting and it looks pretty good. They do have a lot of outfitters but I know many of the farmers are friendly and used to allow you to hunt or even join with you.

I'm no computer wiz, but the easiest way I have found is to use Photobucket and copy and paste the direct link wherever you want it. Some one more technicaly savy may be able to give you more help.

If I may so ask, why are you ready to give up on SD?

Your best bet for Minnesota is SW or West Central and Montevideo would be classified as West Central . Plenty of public lands (State and Federal) in both those areas if you can't find any private. Bring non-Tox shot for Federal lands of course. Many sporting goods stores sell Atlas maps for finding WMA's or you could go to the Mn DNR website to download or have maps sent out.

If you are going to try Montevideo, the best and most public land is near Lac Qui Parle Lake. The problem is The Contolled Goose Hunting Zone is closed to pheasant hunters while goose season is going on. I am not sure how late the Goose Season on Lac Qui Parle goes this year. There is still quite of bit of public ground near Appleton, but my personal opinion is Lac Qui Parle is the best habitat.

Bruce-
Where would you be coming in from? Do you want to go back to Montevideo area again or are you willing to venture a little further? Are you looking for suggestions of locations where public land is plentiful and "ripe" or are you looking for outfitter suggestions?

I was out on public land near Montevideo/Canby on Wednesday (yes, in the hurricane) and I limited out in a couple hours.

I think with the strange weather we've been having the public land hasn't been hit too hard.

Hi Quailhound: What I want to do is put up a picture like your quail that will go with all my posts. Thanks for your suggestions. I will work on it.

Hi birdshooter: Yes, you may ask. I grew up there and my Dad, Uncle, and two brothers went down there every weekend when we weren't hunting ducks up North more. My brother still lives in Mpls and it would be fun to relive some of those great hunts. South Dakota was very disappointing this year. We went to Pierre and found that the Walk-in areas were all shot out. They allow youth and local folks to hunt two weeks before we got there. Guys were still getting limits on farmer's land but we had no success on getting permission. I have hunted twice by Sioux Falls and both times we had fantastic shooting with an outfitter. A lot of fun but very expensive. I was also hoping to run into some Sharptail/Chicken but Ginger and I tramped a lot of grassland and did not get one covey up.

Thanks Wirehairs and FCSpringer: I will check those out if and when I can get out there. I still can hunt in SD five more days but I will try another area if I am able to go

Hi Kal: I live in Prescott, AZ so once I get back to MN it doesn't matter where I go. It is just that I grew up hunting in the Montevideo area. What suggestions do you have.

Bruce, I hate to tell ya but you might run into some of those same issues here in MN as well. Public areas get hit often in Mn too, at least until the weather starts turning cold. Unfortunately getting on private land can be hit and miss at best. Of course you never know until you knock on a few doors, just that the odds may stack against you.

On a brighter side the SW and West Central have an abundance of public lands and depending on the area, you can hit a bunch in the course of a day. Just be sure to bring some Non tox shot along as the WPA's are every bit as good as the WMA's and most especially after freeze up.

Good luck, I'm planning on hitting some this weekend.

Hi birdshooter: I know you are right. I guess I am looking for the old days that no longer exist. I will check out SW and West Central on the web and see what I can find. Thanks and good luck to you this weekend.
