Milford Lake Area

Very bleak:( My BIL has family west of there and they've had little to no luck whatsoever.

Definately don't come from louisiana to bird hunt there. Go farther west and you'd be way better off.

I've hunted post a few times this year. You gotta know what you are doing. I hunt it as it is close to my house. Haven't seen a pheasant all season.

I've called in several rolls/strands or razor wire.

That stuff is no joke. Be careful with your dogs.

All of my kansas hunting has been west of Milford Lake this year. Quail numbers are average, but there are some nice covies if you can find them. Roosters are few and far between, but I have seen an encouraging number of hens in several spots that I've hunted. The trick with the Milford area is eliminating areas because there are so many public access spots out there, but only certain areas seem to be productive for me.

I hunted Ft. Riley a few years ago, and accidentally ended up on a tank trail

Also, if you hunt on post, you have to have your firearm registered with Ft. Riley Military Police. You also used to have a post hunting license (not sure if they still do that).

Pardon the language, but I used to hunt the shit out of Milford Lake in college. It used to be really good, as far as public wildlife areas are concerned. However, it seems to get hammered anymore. And I mean HAMMERED. Most of what's out there is probably obliterated within the first week or two, leaving only remnants :(

As Radar stated, do yourself a favor, and go a little further West

I was stationed at Ft. Riley 2 yrs ago. I was there for 6 years. I loved Kansas so much I married a Kansas girl, and her family got me hooked on birds. So I only get one chance a year to go hunting there. But I only have 11yrs till I can retire frome the Army. Then I will be a full time res. on Kansas.

One last question. How is the Merrysville area. My wifes family try to take a trip there every year but I dont think they are this year. I really hope that I can atleast get out with my dog for one day. B/C unless you like duck hunting here there are no other bird here.

Just got back from hunting around milford lake all day and did fairly well for that area! We walked all day and worked hard but we moved 5 coveys of quail and got up 6 roosters bagging 2! The wind was brutal however and hurt some of our chances of getting more birds! But me and my dad still had a blast!

Hunted Dickinson and Clay counties! Clay Center was our center point for private and public ground that we hunted!

Rooster

I would look for some place else to go besides the Marysville area. The blizzard last winter did a number on birds up there. You can find a couple but it is an all day event.
