Might be a bismuth shortage.

I contacted BOSS about their copper shot. They specifically stated in their response that copper shot is legal anyplace that non-toxic shot is required. The testing device they have developed that is pending approval by the USFWS appears to allow testing without dismantling a shell. The coating specified in the USFWS' approved shot type listing allows testing by a UV based device through a "clear" shell casing. Some others have noted that another company apparently has some kind of copyright, patent or whatever on the currently "recommended" device.

I still am not going to use BOSS copper in areas requiring non-toxic shot until this all gets smoothed out. I do plan on using it on wild birds, but only in areas not requiring non-tox. I just don't like looking over my shoulder while hunting, though in over 60 years of upland hunting I have only been checked by law enforcement twice, once in SD and once in Kansas. Those boys are spread pretty thin!

I've shot pretty much exclusively Boss since they started and always ordered by the case so I still have quite a few but once I'm out I think I'll look another direction. It's a shame because I really, really enjoyed their legacy and Warchief loads.

Their whole choke tube release and follow up rubbed me the wrong way, and now trying to say that copper is superior after years of marketing the opposite just makes it hard to trust them. Even if they're telling the "truth" now, at some point it seems they were being less than sincere.

I agree. I read their copper shot hype with a grain of salt. "As good as bismuth" would have been a more honest approach. BOSS started out offering things the big boys didn't but their venture into copper makes me uncomfortable. Hopefully they get back on-track. I very much appreciate them as a US based company. That says a lot but their marketing seems less than straight forward.
