Meat Processing

So I got a doe in my yard this year on the last day of the season, I am on 5 acres and I had a tag. It was the 1st time I got a deer with a bow!

So I have had 2 different recommendations for processors. The first was Steves in Avada and the second was Rocky Mountain Meats. Does anyone have any experience with either of these processors?

Thanks!

1st and foremost congrats on the doe. Anything with a bow is a great accomplishment. My 1st and only doe came from down your way. I have not anything processed by either place, but I have heard very good things about Steve's in arvada. If processing this yourself is something you are interested in you can pm me and see if we could set something up (My neighbor and I have processed 3 deer together). Again; congrats!

I had my cow (elk) done by Steve's this fall. My first time, as I usually process them myself. No complaints at all, but it isn't cheap!

I've used Steve's off and on for at least a decade and my old man for at least 20 years. They definitely do a good job but like Cokid and Mcoffey24 said, their prices have gotten increasingly higher in the last few years (what hasn't though?) especially for steaks. In my opinion, for a small critter like a doe, the best thing to do is butcher your own cuts and then have them (or another processor) make your burger and sausage or specialty stuff like jerky and summer sausage. I am addicted to their jalepeno jerkey. I like to get suet from a good butcher shop and mix it 80/20 venison/suet for burgers. I'm happy to come down and hack at it depending on what you decide to do. Should be pretty tasty!

Another option

I have had Steve's do a couple and there snak sticks are awesome, I think the Meat Clever on 53rd and Tennysen are a little more reasonable (99 cents per pound hanging weight) for burger, roast, and steaks. But I don't remember what Steve's was at last time. My father and Grandfather both used the Meat Clever since the late 70's I believe with no complaints. Just make sure your meat is your animal where ever you go. Drop Em, Rob.

Thanks for all of the offers of help!

My wife wanted the deer out of the barn ASAP so I bit the bullet and took it to Steve's as I was going to have them do some sausage and jerky for me anyway. It wasn't that expensive, always more than I want to pay, to have it processed by them and it kept the wife happy. On the positive side everything will be vacuum packed and ready for my freezer when I get it back. I think it was like $80 to process a 76lb deer (gutted, skinned, and legs cut off, like I said she wasn't very big).

Next year I will take someone up on helping me process it myself. I make a lot of pheasant sausage and would like to do some of my deer sausage next year.

Happy Hunting!
