I am thinking of going out around Mankato the first week of the season. I was wondering if anybody had any success in this area?

Thanks Jeff

don't quote me, but if i remember correctly, i was up there several years ago and was shocked at how little cover was available, those guys farm it fence row to fence row....i saw very few birds and left the area immediately.

Jeff, if you don't find any birds in Mankato try moving south a little bit. There are normally decent birds in that area.

Thanks for the information. I have land to hunt around Axtell. I am just looking for something new to hunt. Did you ever hunt around the wildlife area?

Haven't made it to the WA yet. I've hunted between Delphos and Concordia for some time now, with varied results. I'm excited to move a bit this year as my friend has made Courtland his new home. He did say he's been seeing quite a few quail on his evening drives, but not so many pheasants. Won't have any more info until season starts.

Back in the 90s I went to tech school at Beloit and hunted the CA area around Concordia with good success. Little further away is Glen Elder with lots of public ground. Used to whip up on them there on a regular basis on my way to Cawker City to eat with Gramma. She loved going to chase roosters with me between Cawker and Glen Elder. Dad made a trip out that way last season and told me to stay on south side of lake, lots of birds. Have heard no reports from friends this year, but will try to contact them. If you dont hear from me there must be lots. Will post if no birds. GOOD LUCK

We hunt private ground in Mankato every year. We do reasonably well, though last year there was a definite increase in quail which was nice. I don't hunt much WIHA around there because it usually gets pounded. But if you knock on a few doors farmers are pretty welcoming in the area

Would you suggest further West? I am planing on going opening week. I will be out there mid week. Do you think the pressure is that bad early in the season?

Jeff

think of it as- it's the opening and everyone with a dog or without wants to get there while the birds aren't quite as smart- which in itself is actually funny-

generally speaking I've never been one to really enjoy the opening- it's crazy- unless you have private land to hunt on- and you are the only one hunting it

public land- there are some that will force you off-

public land is a pain but up here not very many peaple hunt it as it is to big for them and thats wheere the birsds go especially when the big snow starts fyin

really- where is this that it has such big areas that nobody hunts-

tell me- I like big areas- preferably larger than a mile by mile

WIHA Atlas- name the county and the bisecting roads- I'll be up there opening or soon after- you can pm me if you feel 500 hunters might show up

been there done that- noone comes to hunt- you're nuts

I'll come up there and you show me a real big area that noone is in or going to come crowd me out- meaning nodody hunts it-- not talking about plowed land- good habitat- find me a place I can camp and hunt for three days

dont give away my secret spots. HaHa. Why is it everyone is afraid of public land? We always enjoy hunting pressured land with a good dog. Slow down and hunt them, Dad is 75 and will walk his butt off on these places knowing most people will let the roosters slip by them. He loves going in to a spot like this right behind a large group of go fasters and kill a limit.

I too like WIHA's- preferably big sections- sort of like that under 3 feet grass stuff- preferably within a mile of some grain- I've sat and watched hunters who get out at the crack of dawn- I wait awhile and let them leave- 2 to 4 Britt's can get it done

when someone says there are big areas that folks don't hunt because they're to big- why I just have to hear about those- I'll just strap on the Garmins and go for a walk

GCB wants to hunt- with a few rules on these areas nobody hunts- well- heck- count me in- if they're so big a fella could spend all day or three- I don't particularly like small areas as mine get out there aways

on the opposite end of the spectrum, some of the little, unsuspecting out of the way places that look boring, especially from the road, can be much more inviting once you get back in the cover. some of these little, innocent places can hold more than a few birds, as they are often overlooked or judged to be too small to fool with....one or two guys with a dog can be pleasantly surprised, especially later in the season.

rules HUH I just went back through every post on this topic that I have made and nothing about rules shows up

Old School- all dogs must back one on point, no fighting for retrieves, no rabbit pointing, no shooting at rabbits, no shooting at dicky birds or non hunted game- no trying to control someones dog- no shooting at low flying birds, no shooting wounded birds on the ground- no stepping in to flush for another's dog unless given the ok

dog points rabbits, mice, doesn't back 4 times you put the dog up
