I hunted a river bottom with the young guy this morning, about an hour after the snow started (it snowed the entire time we were out), there we filter strips along it, but the birds were in the 15 foot tall willows that were in the corners, low in the waterway. With only 2 of us, it was hard to be in the right place, needed 2 more guys to cover the water side also. I walked through one of these willow thickets. These willows still had their leaves on their canopy. Every time you bumped one, the new fresh snow cascaded down on you. I was soaked after that, but the young guy did have one that exited on his side and was had. The next pocket of willows, I got to the back side and did have one come out that I stoned, but fell on the wrong side of the river in the pocket of willows on that side. At the end we had a blocker (w/ a truck) , a ride to the beginning, where I changed out of my entire upper level of clothes. We hunted the opposite side and saw one hen. Got soaked again, while motoring thru a stand of willows to get to where my rooster fell. I got cold, wet and one rooster. I was done after that. No limit today, but I am OK with that. I will take the young fella and a couple of his buddies out to the CRP tomorrow and hopefully get our birds in a couple hours. Tough conditions were had here today.
