Looking to hunt with on Saturday 12 2011

Sarge

Hey guys, I'm looking to get out on Saturday with somebody. I've only got one day before going wheels up to Europe on Sunday.

I know a lot of the WIAs but don't have a dog. It's just me and would like to hit it hard on Saturday. Let me know if you'd like or don't mind some company. I'm in Colorado Springs.

Thanks.

I'd invite you along but I am heading for RFW Deer the first 9 days instead...

For the rest of you Sarge is a great guy... and the only "Catch and Release" Hunter I have ever hunted with... Met up with him last year. He shot a rooster in our first field... bagged it and carried it for a few hours/miles. When we got to the truck, we set our guns down, he pulled his bird out, set it on the tailgate...

A few seconds later, it jumped off the truck, ran down the road and flew off. Strangest thing I have ever seen.

Sarge... how long are you gone for? Hoping not too long...

My son and I, and our 2 year old GSP will be out there, just not sure where. The dog is green, but eager to get out there. Thinking about starting south of Wiggins, just not sure where to go as I have not had a chance to scout anything.

Anyone have any advice?

Better head farther east than Wiggins...unless you like extreme hiking with no chance of bird.

I figured that WIA might be worth a try, but it's so hard to know...and everything's secretive. Just looking to take my boys out and hopefully see some birds...

Nothing is really secretive...the fact of the matter is it is an odds game...looking for all of the right conditions takes a lot of time and then you are still guessing...if you make a commitment of getting out once a week for the season and cover different ground each time you will find all sorts of cover or not so much that these ditch chicken's like to hide in. Each year the conditions change with fields harvests weather roosting conditions, so with that said sometimes what worked last year may not work this year...so go for a nice walk with the boys and the dog, go as far east as you can afford and hunt.

If you are looking to meet some people and up your chances on opening day...Burlington Rooster Round up is the way to go.

Keep your chin up and maybe we could all meet up for a day hunt this year.

Pete

Thanks Pete, we'll do that. I know it is really more about luck, but I know there are some guys not willing to share an ounce of info with us city boys

The Burlington Rooster Roundup sounded kind of good, but I worry it will be people tripping over each other, shooting aimlessly about. I would rather have a peaceful day.

We'll try and meet up sometime this season.

Understand your concerns...yet to see what your fear is with the rooster round up safety first, last and always.

A lot of the information is really BS as i see it...there is nothing that I can teach you that you do not already know. Drive to a field, if ii is a farmers not a WIA or Burlington Rooster Roundup field knock and ask permission to hunt, it is good to bring a tiding of joy for the lady of the house something odd and unique that comes from the big city that costs a few dollars. If the answer is no leave your gift and move on. (Hint leave your name and number so they can changer their mind.) Remember Mom always told you never go to a strangers house without some form of gift...It holds true still today, manners goes along way...It is the best way to teach young kids how to communicate to complete strangers in a non threatening way.

Fishing, hunting, walking, building model airplanes with our parents invokes a certain amount of our attention, frustration and learning...take advantage of every moment and show your boys how to interact with society and responsibility and the birds will come as a fruit of your labor.

Make it a memorable experience, and Make it a Great Day!!

@5Gen: Dang Pete, this is the most I've seen you talk on here ever. Great advice!!!

@Scooter: GO EAST young man ( as far as you can go & not cross the line into KS or NE)!!! If you put in some truck miles & boot work, you won't be disappointed - there are plenty roosters from Burlington thru Yuma all the way up to Holyoke & above/north! You wont see one wild pheasant if you stop short at Wiggins, but you can do some bang-up goose hunting there if that happens to float your boat... :D

@Sarge: Which way you going??? PM me with specifics, I'll be out there - if we don't hook up this wknd, maybe later in the season. I don't even start getting really serious about it until Dec & Jan! ;)

Thanks hen, hen...we headed out by Fleming and the hunters were so thick you wouldn't have known if you stepped on a pheasant. We got skunked, and did not talk to anyone that was successful out there.

Looking at the map I think I could go to Yuma for the same drive time. Any comments on if there will be anything worth going for next weekend? Or is it best to give 'em a break for a few weeks?
