Looking for woodcock

I don't have much experience with English Setters to offer an educated comparison; but my Small Munsterlander is a great Woodcock and Grouse Dog. Although, sometimes ranging a bit too far, but that's my fault for not reining her in often enough. These are very intelligent, high energy dogs with unwavering prey drive. A good family dog that really gravitates to the one that takes her hunting regularly. This is a NAVHDA dog who has achieved NA prize I and UT prize III. So she knows what she's doing most of the time and probably more often than I do.

Thanks for the info mhuf! He's narrowed his choices down to a Wirehaired Pointing Griffon and the Small Munsterlander.

Just got done talking to a few guys that run their Springers in the Delaware National Recreation Area, they said they came across two nests. So I guess it's a good idea not to run the dogs in Woodcock habitat areas.
I usually find the nests about the second week of April in Bradford County, but it's better to play it safe.

Go ahead...have at it! lol.

From my experience, training frequently with three griffs (1m 2f ),it's like comparing a Ferrari to a 4 x4 pickup. The SM is fast, very agile, the consummate athlete. The larger Griff is nose to the wheel, very deliberate and methodical. The SM inherently tracks well with scent on the ground while I think the Griff does a great job picking scent from the air. The SM matures slowly, acting only as a responsible adult at 4-5 yrs. The Griff seems to know better sooner, but yet seems comfortable living the life of a 17yr old teenager, a little rebellious. Both are fantastic dogs!

Hey... that's a perfect description! Nothing like hands on knowledge. He's an older gent, always hunting behind Springers and loving it, but was looking to slow "his" pace down a bit. Thanks!
