Looking for locals to guide?

By the way LC Smith. I would love to pick uour brain sometime about Kansas or SD. Going that way one day is on my bucket list
I’m happy to chat with you and share what I can. Feel free to send me a message behind the scenes and we can take this conversation off-line.

Our group hunts all over NC & NW iowa during the season, I can tell you opening weekend will be difficult to find anyone with private land. Not to say it's impossible but it is by far more difficult to find. With that said if you don't have a dog, I would try and get down to the area you are planning to hunt the night before and do some scouting. Drive around or find a spot that looks good and just sit on it till dark and see how many birds are out by the road, on field edges, flying around. It's usually a good indicator of what the next morning can bring. I understand you won't have a dog but that doesn't mean you can't have success. Walk slow, stop every 25-30ft for 10 seconds or so, keep the talking to a minimum. If you don't succeed in the morning unfortunately there is no golden hour in IA the beginning of the season as the day ends at 4:30 regardless. Also, I would highly recommend looking for a smaller piece of land that you could possibly keep to yourselves if you have enough vehicles. And one other item of note, is get to your spot early, don't be afraid to grab a thermos of coffee and get to a spot at 5am, something soothing about watching the sun come up drinking a cup of coffee and listening to the rooster's cackle! Best of luck on your trip!!

I would push it off a couple weeks. I dont know much about Ft Dodge for birds, but another 45-50 miles NW definitely gets you into some

Looks like common thread for us is opening weekend is a tough choice. Makes sense when I think about it a little more. We thought it might be our best chance to catch some uneducated birds before they get shot up.
Our vacation time is already picked so we will still give a try. I do think hitting small fields is a good idea. We will for sure try to find one of those.
Thank you guys

Anytime out in the

Anytime you are in the field is still better than sitting on the couch!
