Just picked up my 8 week old GSP and i was looking for any ideas on crate training. Also general commands since the typical sit, come, stay are frequently used in the field and i don't want any confusion with the others.

Very good article Gatzby :)

Remi do have to tell you the first couple of nights are the worst because the little guy will want out and maybe it's the gal in me but it was hard not to feel sorry for them. Take them out to potty and that's it. One little thing I do add is I throw an old sweatshirt or tshirt in with them...one that smells like you. Yes, crazy I know :)

yeah im going to try the shirt ting because lastnight i slept on the floor near the crate with my hand inside because thats the only way she would stay quite and finally she fell asleep. My wife said i was pathetic lol

Mike Lardy recommends letting a new pup sleep in bed with you the first couple of nights for bonding......... Than going to traditional crate training. I don't think i will do this with my next pup but he has a hell of a track record

I started off sleeping right by the crate and night by night I moved away to the couch, then I would sneak off the couch and go upstairs and soon enough just go upstairs. Until my wife begged and pleaded and now Mojo sleeps in the bed with us.... I had added a crate in the bedroom for him as well so he wasn't left alone.

One thing that helped a ton was Kongs. I could put food and some peanut butter in a kong and toss it in the crate to take his mind off me leaving - it helped a bunch.

ive tried the kong my new pup in no way shape or form is food or treat motivated lol so im hoping that changes alittle to make training alittle easier.i brought her to work today and put a crate next to me and put some toys in there and she haas gone in and out on her own and even took a hr. nap in there and every time she goes in she gets praise.

Wow you're lucky - I wish I could take mine to work!

My experience has been that if he doesn't like food or one treat, he will like something different, you just have to find it. Mojo loves hot dogs, so we use them in some training.

The one thing you need to do is take a ton of pictures. You'll miss the puppy stage when its gone.

yes im very lucky.now i seem to have a problem with her always wanting me to hold her.everytime i sit down she comes over and puts her front paws up on me and whines and if i pick her up shes content.Any suggestions?do i give in and hold her or do i ignore her?

I would ignore her and the instant she quits whinning and drops to the ground use a verbal marker or preferably a clicker and reward with a treat. Be careful and don't over do this as a really smart dog will shape you by pawing whinning and dropping to the ground (all for a reward). IE Verbally mark her (click) and reward her for simply sitting occasionally. Remi is right hot dogs are awesome, some times soft cat treats are the answer (salmon flavored). Also when you do pick her up hold her until she is calm don't put her down if she squirms.

awsome thanks for the help!!i figured that was part of the cure. How should i go about introducing her to my other large breed non hunting dogs i have?I put her outside in the fenced in yard with them and she hides with tail between her legs and whines any ideas i appreciate the help.

Be there for her, crouch down so she can use you to shield herself from them until they warm up to each other

So much is dependant on the temperment of the other dogs. I would introduce them one at a time to pup so as not to overwhelm. Check out your local community education to see if they offer a puppy kindergarten. These classes are a blast and the social skills pay off big time

My setter didn't seem to be too into treats for training but hot dogs work great. He just gets really thin quarter slices, just enough to get the taste of a hot dog. He was instantly motivated and has been since. Now that he is motivated I'm giving more "good boy" and less hot dog. It definetly worked keeping him interested at first.
