Heading out tomorrow to the Happy Hunting Grounds on the high plains of western Kansas for the dove opener. Will be firing the new gun for the first time. Taking a cousin who has never hunted but wants to learn our ways. Then heading to CO to hunt the dusky grouse in the mountains over the long weekend. I am locked and loaded!

Best of luck to you Sir! I can't wait to get out there myself but I have to wait a couple weeks to head out west. I'll do some hunting around here until then and hopefully spot some chickens for later............:eek:that's what I'll be looking like in a couple weeks.

Will be doin the same sir...1/2 day of dove tomorrow morning + a full day of blue grouse on Sat...it's all I can manage to squeak in right now, but mighty GRATEFUL for any chance to get out with the dog & a couple friends!!!

Lock and Load

All packed and ready to roll.Leaving for Eads, Co to burn some 71/2 shot. Supposed to be in the 90's. Gonna scout around this PM and early evening. Good luck and safe hunting to all!

Well looks like I'll be waiting a little while.... Went out last night for a few hours scouting out some places, and there just aren't many doves around this area. So we shall see.... I'd just like to get the gun a little dirty is all, and get the dog some work.

Mine opens soon also but you know I just don't have bug bite getting to me as YET........Bob

Skipping school a little early tomorrow and heading out to catch the late flyers as they come in. Looks like a pretty good crop of doves in the Panhandle.

So would you let your teachers skip out a little early to go wack the peace bird?

Was hoping to head out tomorrow but will be cutting silage. I have not seen to many around the fields yet. Maybe it needs to get colder or something.

Proceed with extreme prejudice!

I wish Iowa would get on the band wagon with a dove season. I believe every state that borders us has one. I see plenty of doves.

@moellermd - if it's corn or milo you're cutting for silage (and not just grainless sorgum), go check your back-trail a few days or a week afterward...you should be in the money if there are dove anywhere in the area & a cold front doesn't come thru and spoil it! :10sign:

Hope to see some pics and hunting tales from you guys.

On my walk yesterday, I noticed some very early signs of Fall:thumbsup: The smells, a few turning leaves.

I may just have to take a few days next week, take a little trip. Couple days on the grasslands and a day or two in the mountains.:):)

Hey, I give the teachers 5 personal days on top of the 5 state days that they can use in their 187 day contract...if a teacher wants to go hunt, it's on them. School's out at 3:15 so they have time.

Here's a couple pics from opening morning to get things started. Nothing to write home about & def not a red-hot TX or NM field shoot - but it's first feathers of the season & the dog got a couple good marks & a blind in the deep stuff - I'm not complaining, it was a beautiful CO morning just me and the pooch chillin together in a cottonwood & dead-tree laced stream bed.

Things started off real good, dropped a double (the two Eurasian collareds) right out of the box & a single mourning dove shortly thereafter...Thing went downhill from there, missed a couple easy floaters & couldn't even fire a shot at quite a few which had the uncanny knack of flying between me & the clubhouse, horse barn or guys out on the sporting clay range...Oh well, all in all not a bad morning out for close to home & back in to work by mid-morning.

Oops almost forgot - heard close cackling in a couple different directions!

First dove of the Season ! Not much to look at, ended up getting two more for the morning.

Birds were pretty sparse where I was hunting; turns out I should have been 3 miles to the north. Talked to a few guys that limited-out in an hour after the birds began to fly.

Talked to the local Game Warden, he said the number of birds are down this year compared to last year. Not what We want to hear.

Lock and Load

Hunted the southeastern part of the state of Colorado. First hour of hunting was on dryland. Did not do too well. Moved to the irrigated land about 6 miles south and saw lots of birds! Managed to bag 8 in about an hour but should have limited out. Planning to go back out Friday afternoon and hunt the evening and the following morning.
