Last week I finaly got out scouting some walkin areas and even a couple State Land Areas, I found some stinker areas, but I found some real good areas too. I'm stoked! I'm going to miss the opener cause of work (very depressed about that!), but I sure will be out there during the middle part of the week following the opener! (the good thing about my job.)I just hope there are some roosters left by the time I get out there?? Lol.... I really hope all you pheasant hunters out there find birds opening weekend and get great dog work but are shatty shots!!!:D

My young setter had a great time and had some terrific points!! It was great watching him do his thing and to have fun doing it!! :10sign:I think he's going to be a good one!!

Please share how the opener goes?? I'll be at work wishing I was out there, but I'll be watching for the posts!!

Those areas will be POUNDED on opening weekend!
There will be some birds left, but they will be well educated.
A good time to hunt those areas with good cover is just after a fresh snow in December.

I agree... Opening weekend is for the birds in Colorado, if you hunt public area..

The folks from "the city" and such make it almost impossible to hunt those areas...

I grew up in that area of the state.. nice to see the number of birds make a come back, but with it came the number of hunters.

Wait a couple of weeks and knock on doors... there are a large number of folks that will guide you to some great cover...

Yup, AFTER the circus is where it's at - unless you have at least somewhat controlled private access. But some of those exact same opening day/wknd "stinkers" can be real late-season gems under the right set of conditions - especially if they have HEAVY cover immediately adjacent to food (& the more impenetrable the better)! Late-season weeds out the crowds & separates the men from the boys, you gotta really want 'em then - personally, I love it best when every single rooster is a satisfying & hard-won trophy!

is it really a circus?

I was hoping to try Colorado for the first time this year; was looking at the SE corner for opening weekend. Have a GSP that will be making his first "official" pheasant hunt this year, but don't want to deal with the chaos.

Is it really that busy or will I be able to find a few spots that me and the dog can work over without having to deal with all the opening weekend bs? me and the pup will find the birds, just don't want to deal with - you know what I mean

anyone know of a place to stay in that corner of the state? haven't be able to come up with much, will be camping in the grasslands unless I can find a place to call home for a night

will exchange information about New Mexico quail hunting in kind for information about Colorado pheasant hunting

thanks

Yea, I've been hunting public lands with short seasons for most of my life....I'm pretty used to the crowds, earth pounding hunters yelling at they're dogs, and the cross fire that goes along with it! Shatty deal, but that's how it is now on an opener! I can take it, but I don't want to expose my 7mos. English Setter to it. He's got a great start, I don't want to ruin him. I will only be hunting areas and situations that are best for him and I. I did find some areas that I think are going to be ok when the pressure pushes them and the crowds die down (hopefully sooner than later). I'm really happy Colorado has a longer season to explore the different areas and see what me and the pup can learn together!

This weekend I'm going to take the wife for a drive and knock on some doors and see if I can find a couple quite spots for me and the pup to hunt together during the weekdays? Anybody have any suggestions of where to start?
It will always just be me and the pup hunting where ever, and once and awhile the wife will tag along just for the hike of it!! At least for this year anyway, I'm hoping she likes it enough that I can get her and her 14yr old daughter into the sport next year! :):D

Sorry we come out goat but they dont let us hunt in the city. :D

Yep..... I was thinking about knocking on a few doors or maybe catching a few farmers/ranchers out and about before the hunt just to see what kind of response I would get if I asked them if me and the pup could hunt they're land after the crowds died down and after Thanksgiving weekend. Maybe I'm just looking for an excuse to get out scouting some hunting areas again??

@1971: I think you would have much better luck if you knock on doors well after the opening wknd, you may be awful disappointed @ the less-than-desirable results in the middle of the ruckus! JMO/two-cents worth...

@1971: LOL, back atcha - just make sure to throw yer gun & the pup in the truck with, ya never know!

Neat Little Trick Worth Remembering: Try sneaking in a good field or two on opening day well behind everyone while they're all gone to lunch. The dog & I quietly alone & unnoticed came out with a limit in a single pass down & back after I watched the field thru binoculars get hammered earlier that morning by a big group with little results for the effort!

I will agree that the WIA get a lot of pressure. However I have been hunting these areas for years. I hunt alone with no dog and I still get a few birds. Private is great but I just can not bring myself to knock on a strangers door to ask them a favor. Maybe I just need to get over that hang up and my luck would be a lot better.

Me and the pup went out scouting some more WIA's, found some good ones! I'm stoked!! I'm really not concerned about the crowds and where everyone ends up hunting, the areas I went to hold plenty of birds with great cover and lots of land for the birds to evade hunters. I believe that some of these areas will hold birds the whole season and its just going to come down to good dog work and a high desire to work my arse off to get me some roosters for dinner! It will be a great place for the pup to get some experiance!!
