Late season plans

That my friend is special...there is a special bond you form when you spend time like that with your dogs, it will last a lifetime!

Ok, you've hunted other preserves before, in your opinion why are the pheasant and quail on Vince's land able to survive and reproduce, where as in MOST CASES they can not.

The farm I was at today is the one he uses for training. He normaly does not have people who are not members of his hunt club hunt this farm. So I guess this farm does not see as much pressure as other preserves. But it does get hunted hard. This one area is 500 acres that he has good cover on. And there is some good land in surrounding the farm that can hold birds and won't get hunting pressure. I think he also does what predator control that he can. As far as the quail go, it has been several months since any new quail have been released. It may help that the birds are released when they are younger. But I think a lot of it is due to the type and amount of cover he has on this farm. I'm thankful that he allowed me to hunt this property he has. He said I was the first one this year to hunt the area that was not a member of the club. Probably since I came from a good distance and was by myself. I also told him that I didn't want to shoot up the coveys he had. I was only goint to take 2 or 3 quail from any covey I found. It helps the birds if hunters don't shoot everything they can. I let several birds go today because I didn't want to shoot them all up. It was one of my favorite days in the fields with the dogs.

Today I hunted a different farm in the morning before heading home. I started out just hunting to see what I could find. The dogs got some more good work today and found a total of 6 pheasants with 5 coming off of solid points. I was able to take 4 of the birds and I thought that was enough for the day. These were scratch birds as well and I didn't have any extra birds put out. No quail were found today but there are some on this property as well. The farm I hunted today was over 600 acres and I just hunted a small portion of it. It was a good 2 days of hunting with at least 25 solid points. I think I may make this a yearly event. Here are some more pics:

I was trying to get a picture of another point but the bird flushed when I was in the middle of the camera going off. I dropped the camera as the rooster flew toward me and I dropped him on my second shot.

Looks like you had a great time! Would you go back during the same time of year? How was the cover on the surrounding farms not leased for hunting?

Merry Christmas to you and your family, and everyone else!

Dan

I think I would head back the same time of year. It just works out best with my work schedule. The cover was still good and held a good number of birds. There was some heavy rain overnight when I was there and they also had snow in the area a few times that knocked some of the cover down a little. But some of it should spring back up when it gets a chance to dry out. A farm beside one of the areas I hunted has around 120 acres in CREP. A lot of the area is wooded, too.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you as well.
