Last hunt of our season

Didn't shoot limits, but beats sitting on the couch at home.

After the first pass we thought it was going to be a real good day. Point on a large covey of quail, points on singles, and a few hens, and then a rooster jumped wild as well. Its always fun when you start walking a field, in it a half mile and see guys park at your trucks and start walking where you intended to walk back. Oh well, public land right? (wow, look at those shadows, somebody needs to work on their photography)

Love the limestone fenceposts. Should have been 2 hanging out of this field though but one of us (me) completely whiffed.....

Katy bringing it in after a point-relocate-point-relocate-point-relocate-point maneuver at the end of the field. Sharp spurred rooster thought he put the slip on us, but made a nice one to end the day.

Ended the day with 3 roosters and a pair of quail. Had a point on another small covey of quail but none were harmed at the flush. Conservationists my friends are, just firing warning shots at them. Also had a huge covey flush wild on us as well but nobody shot at them in a timber patch.

Great end to the season. Looks like fun. I don't think that I will ever forget an opening morning when we parked, walking a 1/4 section. As we were making our turn, guys pull up, hop out and start hunting a draw (we'd already been through). They knew we were there because we were in more pointed pheasants than I've ever been in and there was a lot of booming going on. Plus, I shot twice in the air to let them know we were there. Didn't deter these rude butt holes from continuing to walk the draw and shooting without knowledge of where our dogs were at.

When we got to them, I yelled ... Over one million [expletive] acres of public hunting and you have to jump in on our [expletive] hunt. They laughed -- I didn't find the humor in it. Plenty of birds back then. Hell, we shot limits except for one guy (me) who only killed 3 in one freaking walk.

One thing about the lower bird numbers, lazy rude folks like that seem to be few and far between. I hope the birds rebound faster than they do.

I have been intruded on three times this year... One guy even told me he thought he was helping me out. I looked at him and his buddies smiled and said, "With my two dogs and tail feathers sticking out of my vest does it really look like I need your help?" Shook my head and walked away.

Fishing in Colorado you see intrusions all the time and it seems to be getting worse. I've had guys walk in right next to me or stand directly across from me...
I don't know which closet they left their manners in but they should head home and find them.... Maybe another point they should teach in hunter safety courses.

Cheesy,
Great end to your season! Smiling faces and happy dogs! Every sundown from here on out brings the next season closer...

I dont even hunt the 1st 2-3 weekend because of this anymore. I cant stand it and just choose to avoid the stress. Not sure if I'm to the point with some landowners where I and 2 or 3 of my friends could hunt opening weekend or not - I normally dont ask permission until after rifle deer season and do most of my bird hunting from then until it closes end of Jan.

Hunting the limited WIHA suitable for birds the first 2 or 3 weeks plain sucks.

You were probably close to where I was this weekend - we saw a few birds and I think 4 covey's of quail - I was only able to shoot at one bird due to birds being bumped, flying towards my buddy, a tree in the way, out of range etc - but thats the way it goes sometimes. It was still a great day - Saturday where myself and buddy were at we couldnt have served up better weather - 45-50 or so and barely a breeze with sun and clouds off in the distance - really an amazing day to be outside.

I did have to spend 1 to 1.5 hours or so with my powerwasher yesterday cleaning the goo off of my truck. I now need to take a scoop shovel and move all the mud from the street to my garden or flower beds. The 2 or 3 NC counties I go to I dont get it - any trace of moisture and the top 1-2" turn to a complete paste like substance that is a PITA to get off - I love hunting in the sand and prefer it more but the counties with the goo were closer to my buddy in KC.

I alluded to this in my other thread.... About how I saw a guy in the field, and he made a direct beeline towards me.

I got into a "discussion" on post on FB, about how some people when they see others in the field, will go to them, and try to help them, or try to invite themselves to hunt with them. This guy also stated that he will park next to another truck or go to the other end to be helpful.

I can't even process that line of thinking. If I see a truck parked in an area, I move on. I think that's common respect, but I guess that is lacking anymore. Which is too bad.

Yeah -- especially when that stuff is nice and frozen for the first field and as you leave you find out that, despite the sun shining, blue bird day -- you are slipping and sliding trying to keep it between the ditches.

What is the craziest about that stuff (and what drives me bonkers) is that you get out, look at your 1 inch deep rough and there it is, bone dry solid road bed but you can't get to it because this stuff stick to the treads like its damn gorilla glue.

Fishing intrusions are way worse than hunting. I have several very small rock piles I fish for wipers on and they get stacked in there like cord wood. Nothing worse than when you are catching fish on every cast and the people around you are catching nothing. I have had several encounters that got pretty ugly and the people all say the same thing, you do not own the lake so I can fish as close to you as I want. One guy actually ran into my boat and said sorry the wind blew me into you and if I was not anchored it would have never happened. Go figure that one out.

I don't know how many times I have been fishing a school of wipers and someone will just drive right over the top of them and start fishing. I also have had many bow hunting encounters ruined by pheasant hunters. Sometimes they didn't know I was in there bow hunting but it still happens.

Last year I was hunting with one other guy. Public ground, walking from gravel road to gravel road, so a mile at a time. Two older gentlemen would park their truck and block, when we would get close, they would get back in their truck, drive all the way around and park on the next gravel road and block once they saw which way we were going. My buddy wanted to kill them! I didn't really care. We weren't gonna get those birds that flush ahead anyway. I say gentlemen because one actually waited for me on about the 3rd walk and asked if I minded what they were doing. I said I didn't care at all as they were every bit of 65 years old, but I told him to be careful because my friend is gonna shoot with no regard to where you two are when we approach the end of the strip. He laughed and said "well you two are the youngest ones out here and you have 4 dogs so it seemed like a good idea." He should have asked after the first walk but it didn't bother me. Someone cutting me off in a field or jumping in where I'm heading...They will get an earfull! Cheesy looks like you had a good time. It's nice when others appreciate it too, even if the bag numbers are lower than normal.

I don't mind at all somebody blocking from the road. Often across the road is another grass patch and I know birds are running across the road into it. At least if somebody is on the road they'll either flush so we can see them, or hold tight for somebody to get some shooting.

This past hunt where the guys parked in our trucks and walked where we were planning was upsetting, but one guy ended up blocking for us, telling us he saw four or five run across the road before he got there.

Would love to hunt that quarter section. CRP patch sitting between two CRP WIHA patches. After a pass you just stand at its edge drooling as you hear roosters cackling out in the middle of it.

That would bug the hell out of me, because I don't know them or trust them to shoot around my dogs.

I thought that too at first. But in reality, they were in much more danger than we were. And my buddy shot a couple of times straight ahead. Quarter mile from the guys but I know they heard the rain of pellets coming down. As old as they were I figured they knew gun safety. But I could have been wrong. They ended up getting one rooster and they offered it to us at the end of one of the runs. I told them to keep it. I'm usually hot headed about stuff like that, but for some reason it didn't bother me.

What I find annoying, is these people with these dog trailors, hunting places out, with a bunch of guys. This is bs.
