Large Eastern SD Public area

Saw somewhere there is a quite large relatively new public hunting area in NE South Dakota. Can't seem to find it. Might have been Federal lands. Anyone familiar with this ? Thanks.

Have you looked up the new CREP lands in the area? It may be one of those sections:confused:

Sorry I can't help you out any more.

not sure what part of the northeastern SD you're looking at but I live in Webster. Don't come here this year...NO birds! I am very concerned with our numbers. Brood counts were very low, loss of good land, poor winter/springs etc. I scout about 3 nights a week for geese and then hunt them. Have seen 2 pheasants so far. We are in trouble.

I'm thinking it might have been the Fed. refuges north of Aberdeen. Looks like there might be 2 of them. Probably hit pretty hard ?

I used to hunt the refuge area for years. I thought maybe that is what you were talking about when you brought it up. Gnarly is not a strong enough description for the cattails on that place:eek:. It doesn't open for upland until the day after deer season. I had good luck there scratching out birds. Two years ago it was pretty slim when the water was real high. The warden I talked to said the flooding pushed the hens into marginal cover and the hatch was real poor. Last year I didn't go that far north. Four years ago I had a limit in about an hour

That "large public hunting area in NE South Dakota...... I think that's called Minnesota! Sorry I could resist. A lot of the ground is owned by the Sisston, (sic), tribe of Sioux Indians. You can get a permit to hunt there, but it's probably not what your thinking in numbers, and it's not free, but not outrageous either.
