Kenetrek Boots

While in Sioux Falls today I went to Scheels and tried on a pair of Kenetrek Mountain Extreme Uninsulated boots. Finally taking the advice of EEK. I bit the bullet and bought them. What a pair of quality boots. Unlike anything my feet have ever been in. For $360 I hope they prove me right for the long haul. I'll sure know a lot more by the end of this season.

As many of you know, I have been searching for the right boots for a long time and I just posted yesterday about the Cabelas Ultralight Boots by Meindl. I really like the Ultralight too but in a different way than the Kenetreks. I just might end up keeping both pairs and throwing my old Danners and Irish Setters out. Can anyone use a pair of Danner Pronghorns in size 9EE or Irish Setter upland boots in size 9.5EE? Lots of wear left in both pairs and I'd make you are really good deal.

man...I'm tired of reading about boots...it's boots, boots, boots, all the time with the boots! :D Just messin' with you zeb...I hope they work out for you...Good Luck!

Ha, Ha! I sure hpe they work out too or I'm going to have some very expensive door stops or chew toys for the dogs. :) The Kenetreks are really some quality boots but it is going to take some time to break them in and also for my feet to adjust to them.

The past several years I have been wearing LL Bean Cresta Hikers, Meindl Perfekt Hikers, AKUs, and Meindl Canadians (for when it gets bitterly cold). I still have and like these boots.

Last year I gave the Kenetrek Hardscrable Light Hiker a try. At the end of the season I bought another pair and put them in the closet just in case they ever decide to stop making this boot. My other boots now see very little use. I flat out love that boot. Wore it all year long. Once the snow hit, I just added a pair of gaitors over them.

Enjoy your new boots.

FYI Kenetrek puts a small container of their Boot Wax in every box of boots. This Boot Wax appears to be very similar to Obenauf's Heavy Duty Leather Presevative so I emailed Kenetrek to ask them about it. Are these two products the same and can I use Obenauf's on their boots. Here is the response I got:

We have developed the Kenetrek boot wax for our boots because we know it is safe to use on the boots. Please do not use the Obenauf’s on your Mountain Extreme boots. The reason being is that Obenauf’s has animal content in their wax which makes it a heavier wax which if used on the Mountain Extreme boots will cause the rubber rand to loosen away from the leather we’ve seen it happen so that is why we include the free sample wax to get you started right.

Thanks for taking the time to ask.

Good point Zeb.

I used Obenhauf's for years. After having the rand seperate on my first pair of Kenetreks in less than 6 months of use, I contacted Kenetrek's customer service. They asked me what I had put on them and I answered Obenhauf's. She informed me that Obenhauf's does contain animal fats (something that Obenhauf's does not advertise) and can break down glue. I was surprised and questioned wether or not the person at Kenetrek was giving me the straight dope or just making excuses.

I then emailed Obenhauf's and told them of the story. They admitted that their product does contain "trace" amounts of animal fats and did not dispute what Kenetreks had told me.

BTW, Kenetreks repaired the rand free of charge.

Have I mentioned that I REALLY like their boot??? :D

First Field Test

This morning I took the dogs out to a GPA for some exercise and put the Kenetreks to their first true field test. It was cool this morning with a heavy dew in the grass. I've found in the past that continuous walking in wet grass gets most boots wet on the inside even with Gortex or similar linings. I spent an hour walking through heavy wet grass and my feet stayed completely dry. As far as comfort, I'm still breaking these boots in but I was pretty happy with the feel. The right boot seems to be breaking in faster than the left and is slightly more comfortable. I did feel a slight bit of heel slippage but expect that to diminish as they break in more. The one thing that is going to take some getting use to is when walking on uneven ground you really feel it due to the boots being stiff and the soles quite hard. But they do give you excellent support. I think it's a matter of you and your feet adjusting to the boots. I'm hoping that by January I can report back that these are the "Ultimate Boot".

I've looked at all the boots everybody has mentioned and none of them have the width that I need. I take a 10 eeee.I have found this only in Wolverine and Carolina boots. Redwing don't even carry this size.

Sounds like your feet are as wide as they are long, might be Ruslles for you ,LOL

The shoe salesman where I get them at keeps both 6-inch and 8-inch in stock on the styles that I buy. When I go in and he see me come in he hollers at me and ask which one I want at the time and goes get them. I'm in and out in less than 10 minutes that way.
