well....I tried getting to Kansas since December....was having such a good hunting season in my home state of IL that I found it hard to leave....and wanted to drive to NJ to visit family for Christmas which I havent seen in years....which I did....so then it becomes January and IL season concludes...and the flu sets in....for 2 weeks....I then finally make it to Kansas in time for last couple days of the season....found birds every day and had a great time..just me and the dogs....after hunting new areas out there and new contacts...I plan on returning before January next year....

Very nice. Good to see that you got the dog into some quail.
Some nice looking cover you got into.

yes sir....thanks. I will try not to intrude too much on your great state......I saw quite a few prairie chicken while I was there as well....I'd like to try them in September. Thats something thats been on the bucket list for years....I've never killed one.

I have been able to get some PC pointed and shot during the early season. It can be done, but the weather can be a big issue. It can be too hot to safely run the dogs very long. Morning is about all you can hunt some times. Be prepared to carry a lot of water for the dog.

I average about 20 miles of walking for every Prairie Chicken I get pointed and shot

Back when they first introduced the early chicken season it took me a while to find out the places they could regularly be found on the spots I used to hunt. Was alot of fun. But like Setternut said it can be brutally hot!

Most of the time if I didn't get into Chickens in one or two spots that I usually found them I was done for the day. I had several points on chickens during the early years of the early season. Was a lot of fun but the older I get the less I want to be out walking a pasture for a bird in the heat. LOL!

Glad you had a good time.

are snakes a big issue then as well?

Always want to be mindful of them, and if you see a prairie dog town you can count on rattlesnakes being there.
