KANSAN MAKES $1 MILLION PLEDGE TO PHEASANTS FOREVER

Second Kansan to make substantial donation to Pheasants Forever's Grassroots Conservation Campaign

Pheasants Forever (PF) and Quail Forever (QF) have announced a $1 million pledge from Duayne Madl, 59, of Lake Quivira, to PF's Grassroots Conservation Campaign. A Patron Member of PF and a QF member, Madl made the generous financial commitment because of his strong belief in the wildlife habitat conservation mission of PF/QF.

A lifelong Kansan, Madl grew up on a dairy farm outside of Lawrence. He still remembers shooting his first quail with a single barrel .410 shotgun, and his early adventures in the outdoors grew into a lifelong passion for upland bird and waterfowl hunting.

"As the years have passed, the more I've realized bird hunting was my real love," Madl said. "That's partly because I love bird dogs. Even my Lab, Jess, has a PF Life Membership as a memorial. But if you don't have the habitat, you don't have the hunting, and consequently you don't have places for the dogs to work."

Having grown up in an agricultural family and a farmer himself, Madl is acutely aware of finding a balance between conservation and agricultural production. "I've seen what happens when conservation is thrown out the window," said Madl, now a financial advisor who specializes in estate and succession planning. "But I've also seen what happens when the two exist in harmony."

A few years back, one of Madl's hunting buddies, David Schaffer, consulted with a PF Farm Bill biologist about his South Dakota property, where the pair hunt. Being there for the consultation, Madl liked the fact that the Farm Bill biologist program delivers conservation advice on a personal basis. Madl's belief in the Farm Bill biologist program has led to his involvement in the Kansas Grassroots Conservation Campaign. In fact, Madl currently serves as the eastern Kansas co-chairman of the Kansas Grassroots Conservation Leadership Team.

Madl is pledging $1 million to PF/QF through the organization's first-ever national fundraising effort, the Grassroots Conservation Campaign. Madl is also the second Kansan in less than six months to make a significant contribution to PF/QF through the campaign. At the end of last year, Wallace Weber, of Russell County, made the single largest donation in the organization's history by donating 1,700 acres of land, along with a stewardship fund.

"I'm a lifelong Kansan, and I want to see land used the right way," Madl said. "There are great opportunities for wildlife habitat improvement in this state for pheasants, quail, and all other wildlife, and I'm convinced Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever can help capitalize on those opportunities."

Don't know the man, but hurray for a supreme conservationist! As a bonus, the man sure knows how to dress.....my favorite color-blaze orange!

WOW, that sure is a generous gift to all who love pheasant hunting and enjoy wildlife. He must have a heart made of GOLD. Thank you very much Duayne !!!

Honor to Madl

Mr. Madl, I have never had the honor of meeting you, but I wish to thank you for your extraordinary generosity to PH which will benefit all who read this. I hope to have the honor of meeting you and hunting with you someday.

Most cannot contribute the dollars to Pheasants Forever/Quail Forever that Duayne did, but many can contribute something. I would encourage anyone that is not a member of PF/QF to become a member and if you do not have a chapter in your area, consider getting some hunting friends together and starting one. The banquets that the chapters hold raise money that stays in that community for habitat work as the local committee desires.

The Kansas PF/QF Grassroots Committee is both reactive and proactive. When you look at harvest numbers and licenses sold, you will see that some of the best of times could be behind us. When you look down the road at what is to come, especially with millions of acres of CRP expiring you can see that bird numbers, access to private land, and recruitment of a new generation of hunters could suffer. These issues are being addressed and tackled by a group of diehards from across the state, with the thought that something positive can be done. Duayne Madl heads that group and even though he himself has pledged a million dollars, he has encouraged others to contribute tens of thousands of dollars to this common goal.

The future of hunting in Kansas is in our hands. I hope you will find a way to help make the future the best it can be.

All the best,

Maynard

Well said, just renewed my membership to QF today.

BTW -- how would you describe the difference between Quail Forever vs Quail Unlimited? QF appears to be more habitat oriented...?

There is one major difference between conservation organizations in what they do with funds raised at banquets. Pheasants Forever and their fairly new sister, Quail Forever, believe in the grassroots idea that money raised in that community is spent as that chapter sees fit. What I am saying is that 100% of that money is under local control. Other organizations have different percentages that are sent to national, up to 100%.

Today I, along with Duayne Madl and other Kansas Grassroots members had the privilege of touring the 1,700 acre family farm of Wallace Weber that is being given to Pheasants Forever. Kansas does have some generous people and Duayne and Wallace are two very special ones.

Here is the story on the land gift-

Here Wallace Weber explains his habitat goals for the 1,700 acres he will give to Pheasants Forever at his family home in Russell County, Kansas. The property is home to deer, turkey, bobwhite quail, pheasant and prairie chicken. To Wallace's right is Duayne Madl.

The goal of the Kansas PF/QF Grassroots Team is to fund wildlife biologists to be quartered in the NRCS offices, with the direct purpose of working with farmers on conservation practices that will benefit wildlife. In areas that have this arrangement, the biologists have been responsible for adding about six acres of habitat for every hour worked. We would like to see that happen in Kansas.

PM me if you or your business would like to take part in this effort. Our birds(and our hunting dogs and you and me) will be the big winners.
