Just made reservations

I just made reservations to stay in a small town, that I've never been to, in an area I've never hunted. It's about as remote as I can find and it's going to be a long 2 day drive for me. I'm going by myself, taking 2 dogs and plan on hunting 7 days in the field before I leave. I'm leaving on Nov 8th. I want to get out one more time before the weather turns and snow hits and for some reason, the thought of going back to where I've been going is enormously boring. Same motel. Same fields. Same restaurants. Meh. I just don't want to do it this year. Not sure why. It would a lot easier if I did. I think I just need something new. A new challenge, in a new place to keep this game interesting.

Any of you older guys getting tired of hunting the same places every year?

I'm not an older guy, but I totally get what you're saying. I love hunting the same area with the same group for the past 8ish years. But if its just me, once I figure out the birds/region I love discovering new areas.

The love of adventure. When our group has moved to a new area, it was generally due to crashing bird populations. This includes about every mid-western state. Enjoy your success while you can, everything will change. It is challenging and time consuming to figuring out the new adventure. Might take a few years to be successful, whatever that is. Good luck

Sometimes I have the ability to stumble and bumble and get into an area almost by accident that turns out to be great....that's the plan for this trip anyway.

Amen to that.....I like hitting different areas, especially if it is just me and the dog. My typical group for the ND or SD runs from Wisconsin are 3 or 4 of us. I try to do alot of research so I know that both "groups" can find some success.....we typically split up.
Last year, I ran back out to SD late December into that first week of January. Had great lodging and I never saw another hunter. Hunted my way into birds by day 3.
Completely enjoyed that trip.

Have a great trip. Assume you are taking your Vizsla. I’ve wanted to make the 2 day drive to SD from the PNW but not sure how my V would handle it. Any suggestions for what you do to make it easier on the dog appreciated.

Thanks. I am and honestly he doesn't travel well. On my last long trip, he didn't eat when we got there and had stomach issues and the people I traveled with had Pro-Pectalin, which seem to help get things under control quickly. They breed Vizslas and carry it with them on trips, so I bought some for the upcoming trip. I am also trying daily probiotics to see if I can get his stomach healthier in general before we leave. Purina says probiotics helps with stomach issues caused by stress from traveling, but we will see. The last thing I'm doing is bringing water from home for the first few days to keep his water consistent. He is definitely my problem child. My GSP has a cast iron stomach.

I am always looking for new hunting experiences. Each year I do a couple separate 2 week trips to Montana and SD, and 4-5 days in Kansas. Each trip, ill I'll start by hitting areas I've had past success for and then travel somewhere completely different. However, I rarely plan it out, instead just drifting in a direction based on what I'm hearing from conservation officers, wildlife specialists and other hunters or locals I meet. Helps that I live / sleep out of my truck and don't ever need to make reservations. Have credit card, will travel... Great places to camp reasonably close to great hunting is everywhere if you know how to look for it.

My grand plan one day is to pull a tiny camper behind the truck and drift with the wind for a couple weeks.
Do it. It's how I hunt, except no trailer. Get a light weight topper for your truck that pops up. Dogs sleep back there with me or in the crew cap depending on temps. Easier to find camp spots, navigate dirt roads and don't have to back track and return to the parked camper each evening. Also, I've woken up to 8" of new snow, muddy roads, walked out and shot birds. Wonderful experience.

Much easier to drift when your not weighted down 😉

I actually just got back from hunting an area that was my first time. It took a couple days to get it figured out, but by day 3 we were doing very well. Very fun. As you say, different scenery, different places to eat and different cover to hunt. Finding a honey hole is just the icing on the cake!
