I have been reading and enjoying the threads on the forum. Decided it was time I signed in. I used old and new, because I used to be a traveling bird hunter in my 20's and 30's. Dogs got old, got married and wrapped up in job, and life. Sat out basically the late eighties and nineties, and new century until last year. Got some young French Brittany pups in 2007, and began to work with the dogs and my two now 12 year old twin girls, The twins have progressed nicely, the dogs by the end of 2008, had become competent, ocassionally brilliant, but can't hold a candle, day in and day out, to the old setters and pointers I hunted over years ago. I also have a unique perspective as to the differences in bird #'s, cover, etc. Lots fewer birds, in fact I now hunt mostly pheasants, and happen upon quail, whereas I used to "follow the dogs", and "shoot" quail, ocassionally happening upon a limit of pheasants pointed and or cornered by the dogs. My goodness we were spoiled! Now have my wife hunting, probably to look out for the kids and her dog! We hunt mostly SE-SC Nebraska, and NE Kansas. I realize we could travel out a ways and find more birds, and occasionally we do. Thanks.
