Hey KS guys; I am headed up on Sunday 11/14; my boys are coming up on the 15th and we will be in Hanston all week (actually I'm only hunting Mon/Tues and headed back home Tues night). I'm looking for a place in Dodge City to bunk in with my GSP Taz. Any advice on dog friendly hotel for a night?

You might want to start calling now,at this time of the year,Dodge might be all booked up for the first few days.

JMc,

I was just calling around yesterday and it seems like most of the rooms are full for the opener; unless you want to pack into a single bed with a couple guys and dogs

Silver Spur has always been good to me and the dogs, not the fanciest place but good enough.

Pawnee Valley Lodge in Jetmore may have a room available, worth a call

Do you have a camper cuz rooms will be hard to come by. I always liked taking the camper when i had one but I sold it a couple years ago. I going to get another one before 2011 season.

Seeing quite a few but they are very young. Here is where I hunt and what I've seen:
30 M NW Dalhart: Lots of birds mostly in corn stubble
8 M E of Sunray: Lots of birds in corners and CRP
5 M E of Spearman: Younger birds in CRP and corners
5 M S of Panhandle: Fewer birds but less cover as well

Should be a good year; I'm skeptical because last year was great. Let me know if you come up this way. My boys guide hunt the first two weekends but after that it's all mine.

Going crane hunting next week in Spearman; they are everywhere.

Thanks for the info not sure if I will make it up there or not. I heard those craines called the the ribeye of the sky. Is that right are they really that good to eat?

Good Luck JMC let us how it goes...... does cranes chicken ??

Nope they don't taste like chicken...they are dark and have an almost protein beefy, livery, taste; if they makes sense. They aren't bad, but they are no ribeye! We cut only the breast and tenderize them into steak fingers. A little mashed potatoes and some gravy and your good to go.
