That's correct. Lately, we been "doing" the early Illinois teal season. In about a week, we plan on hunting the Iowa opener (ducks) on the Mississippi. In between the waterfowl hunts, all four dogs are "free roaded" with my ATV at about 10-12 mph. Presently we are going 4.5 miles per session.....on the days between duck hunting trips. By Oct 17 (SD pheasant trip) all four will be up to doing seven miles per day. My Labs are in shape.
After many years of trying to find a gun I can't blame for my shooting, the present gun is a Benelli M-1.......it fits well and shoots what I see......usually. :10sign:
I live just north of Rockford, Illinois and hunted near Galena (a lot) when I was much younger (forty years ago). Last year, I started hunting in the Big Slough area of Pool 13 south of Spring Lake. Since I have a trailer parked very near the boat ramp, I can drive over, live in the "duck camp" and hunt for several days at a time.....instead of making the roundtrip each day. South Dakota pheasants aren't until October 17, so we might as well hunt ducks.
Taffey went the first day of teal season. We were finished in less than 30 minutes. She's been a dream to train and hunt over. Not only does she do advanced retriever "stuff", but I used her often as an upland guide dog. Taffey was a much requested pointing Lab at Blonhaven Hunt Club. We've both retired from guiding. She's 9 now and I'm 69. Next year, we will be the same age.
Last year was her first year on South Dakota roosters. It wasn't too long before she realized they weren't going to let her point up close.
Just got back yesterday from several days of hunting in the areas near Spring Lake. The water level is very low right now with mud flats extending out from many islands. In some places it was difficult to find a place to hide the boat.
On Oct. 1st Spring Lake officially becomes a refuge/sanctuary with zero boat access until the end of the Illinois duck season.
