Jetmore/Dodge City Recent Reports

Wife, two sons, and myself are headed back out to Jetmore/Dodge City area thanksgiving weekend. We hunted WIHA on opening weekend and saw decent amount of birds that seemed to be holding pretty decent for the dogs to point. Anyone hunt this area in that last week and have any reports good/bad. We've been working on the wife shooting skill past two weeks so hopefully this time out she'll bag her first wild pheasant.

Thanks,

FamilyMan

We hunted some WIHA's NW of Dodge last weekend. Got into some birds, lots of hunters, and several covey's of quail. Had a good time!! Wanted to get north around Jetmore, but ran out of time.

Was the quail you saw on WIHA? I had kind of hoped we would have seen some on our first trip but never saw a single quail. Thanks for the update.

Hunted southwest of Jetmore, didn't see a single quail. pheasant numbers seem to be fair to good depending on location of the WIHA in relation to food sources - PM if you want some additional information, hope your wife gets her first

Yes we saw quail on 3 WIHA's, I killed one at the first WIHA we hunted, then 3 at the next, then we saw a covey get up at the last place we hunted (my neighbors dog busted them)

Hunted private in that area yesterday and bagged my four roosters. I will be back today with my partner, daughter-in-law. I think she will have some good opportunities since I saw plenty of birds. The farmer cut the 120 acres of corn Monday, the property is posted and nobody has hunted this year until I went through it yesterday. Three combines cut the corn in just a few hours. Two different sources told me the sky was black with pheasants when they cut the field. I would have to agree, I saw a ton of birds and more or less picked out the roosters I wanted to shoot out of each flush. Shot two nice doubles and was done. Happy Thanksgiving to all and God Bless America !!!

Hunted in Hanston and some between Jetmore and Hanston last week. Limited in pheasant and jumped a couple of covey's of quail. Good Luck!

Hunted 3 mornings south of Dodge and it was tough hunting. Birds numbers where really low last year and seem just about the same this year. Only shot 1 pheasant and 3 quail. Sad thing is not seeing a lot of birds and I hunt both WIHA and private.

***UPDATE***

Just got back from a long weekend in SW Kansas and just wanted to update the thread with our hunting results.

Got to the field on Friday around 2pm between Dodge City/Jetmore on WIHA. We saw a fair amount of pheasant activity, just nothing close enough to shoot at. As sunset approched we parked and watched as the pheasant made there way across the road from a milo field into WIHA. Went to bed excited that pheasant would be there waiting for us in the morning.

Saturday

100 feet into the WIHA we see 20-25 pheasant flush about 200 yards to the west of us. Another 100 feet and again see multiple pheasant flushing 100-200 yards in front of us. Frustrating but exciting to see.

Made our way out west of jetmore hitting multiple WIHA's along the way. Around 3pm we finally have success (thanks beaker for the tips). One field results in 3 killed pheasant. My 12 year old bags his first pheasant with the help of his 1 year old GSP pointing/retrieving it for him. Wife shot at 2 roosters in same field but missed.

Sunday
More of same, birds flushing to far out. Met an extremely nice farmer who stopped and let us hunt his cut milo field. Shot 1 rooster for the day and called it quits and headed back home.

Just wanted to thank everyone for the helpful advice and information.

Sounds consistent -- hopefully colder weather will pin them birds down a little better.

Jealous of the family outing -- my 15 yr old came out 2 yrs ago, had a blast and killed his first rooster. Dad's not cool anymore so he stays home..

Family man,

Thanks for sharing your experience and congratulations!! Sounds like a good time was had by all. My favorite part is that your son killed a bird and his dog retrieved it for him. This will keep him coming back for more for many years to come!! Great work Sir! Best of luck for the remainder of the season:thumbsup:

They were all on Bilbo's parcel.

I moved to different locations on Saturday and Sunday. Found a section where I heard some roosters in a distance. I had never been in this area before. I asked at several farms about where the landowner lives and guess what? He lives in Salina but happened to be in the area Saturday morning and I was lucky enough to find him. Whoa, it was decent, very decent. The farmer told us where to drive and where the best locations would be for us to have some chances. My son dropped his wife and me off and he used the vehicle to block for us at the other end (he is not a hunter). Lots of roosters were running just in front of us, in fact, some birds were no more than 15 to 20 feet and would not flush much of the time. I could have blasted a couple on the ground but that doesn't interest me. We were able to get enough roosters to flush for some easy shots and some beautiful limits. Saturday was great weather and Sunday was windy. Drove back Sunday afternoon and now I am over a 1000 miles from heaven thinking about what happened during five days of enjoyable hunting during a long Thanksgiving weekend. I could use a few days break at this point and appreciate the memories. We saw quite a few others out hunting but few were having much action. The fellows in our hotel had a couple birds between 9 or 10 guys but very few and they hunted from sunrise to sunset. In fact, we stopped to watch their small army of guns and dogs walk a place we hunted early on and they didn't even kick out a hen. We brought two roosters out of there with just two of us and no dogs earlier in the day. The roosters are starting to get thinned out by now but there should still be some decent hunting opportunities for those who want some exercise. Good luck and be safe.

Swellcat my friend, I hope to see you in Kansas one of these days. Better get up there and get busy. In some fields I couldn't find a bird or a pheasant track, and then, sometimes a guy gets lucky. I think the scouting I did six weeks ago was helpful. Some areas are about like last year and if you head to west central to northwest I think the numbers are better. I sure spent a ton of money on gas so far this year.

Some friends and I are making a trip out to the Dodge City/Jetmore area next week. I'm glad to hear some positive, encouraging reports! Thanks for posting your results.:D Hopefully the weather will cooperate for us.
