It's game week!

I guess since Saturday is the opening for pheasant that makes this week game week. Are you ready? Are the dogs ready? Do you still need to get anything done before Saturday?

I've shot clays over the summer to help my shooting. The dogs are in shape and were able to do a couple of preserve hunts along with the youth season. I just need to fill up the water containers and make sure I have enough shells in my backpack to take along. And I already took Monday off:D

Good luck!

Your absolutely right it's game week! Everybody's ready here! Did some more scouting this year and I think I have come up with a few new promising places but time will tell! I have all of next week off and will be heading to Pheasant Camp on the Sunday after the opener!

Brian, you and dogs sound ready! Have any new places that your going to this year? Good Luck!

I don't have any new places this year but I may check out some other gamelands later in the year. I have a nice loop I can make and hit at least 5 areas that hold birds. Once I start I don't have to drive more than 15 minutes to get to one of my stops.

Any good sugestions for a late season hunt? I hunted a few times on the gamelands above Carlisle that is the closest for me. But I've had bad experiences there too many times to go back. I've been sprayed with shot and had somebody shoot a bird on the ground in a field my dogs were working.

Let us know how pheasant camp goes and get some good pics.

Oh yea, were ready and chomp-in at the bit! The only thing we have to due at this point is put together our menu for Pheasant Camp.

We'll hunt a little closer to home to start off, then we have the following week off. The area around our grouse/deer camp is also getting better for pheasant hunting, which is awesome!

Do you hunt both of your dogs together or separate to extend the day?

Sounds like you have a nice setup there! I am not to familiar with your particular area but how far are you willing to drive?

I do hunt both dogs together. They have enough energy to hunt from 8 to 4 when I take a day off work but I don't get to do that as much as I would like. They work well together. Blitz is a better retriever than Nittany but both will bring the birds back. Nittany has been a little better at tracking a running bird but Blitz isn't far behind now that he has a few seasons of experience. I hunted them one at a time when Blitz was young but neither one of them liked being in the dog box while the other was hunting.

I live in Adams county, less than 10 miles from Gettysburg. I would drive up to 2 hours to hunt a new area. I don't want to spend more time driving than hunting. I should probably check out what gamelands gets a good stocking and give it a try. I usualy hunt on gamelands in Adams and York County.

going to be a two hour drive for me, planning on starting the hunt in the early morning at sunrise. gota stop at a wallyworld to pick up a few things and ill be good to go. it'll be an early morning but not as early as leaving at 0300 in Co lol

got my new hunting vest in last week from pheasants forever and shot a buncha clays this past weekend. just counting down the days now.

does Pa produce a public lands map book? Co had a book you could pick up that was separated out by county and mapped out the public lands...ive looked at the online maps for Pa but wasnt sure if i should print those out or just wait ti pick one up

I don't think the PGC puts out a public lands book. But you can print off maps to the state gamelands like you mentioned. The PGC also has an app for smart phones that has maps of the gamelands on it. I have not checked it out yet but I may have to look into it.

Good luck on Saturday!

well crap...ill look into the app, SD had a map even for your GPS

thanks, you too!

Snipet,
The Public Access Maps are only available online as far as I know. Hard Copies of the Game Lands maps can be purchased at the the regional offices!

Brian,
Your lucky you don't have to spend much time on the road! A 2 hour drive for me is one of my shorter drives!

I was going to suggest a spot up in the North Central Pa but that is definitely to far!

With having the two young boys and everything else in life going on it is tough to get too far away but I may just have to do it sometime. I will do a preserve hunt in December and stay overnight. This allows me to get my quail and pheasant fix for a while. I can't really complain with all the work my dogs get. I know I'm better off than a lot of others.

I completely understand! You have something really good going on in that area! I really enjoy hearing about the quail! Hopefully some pheasant will be able to hang around the area!

Hollow Watcher, than reminds me of a call I got from my wife this morning. She was driving to work and saw 3 hen pheasants about 5 miles away from the club where I raise some birds. It's nice to see them but I wish it happened more.

gotchya,

ive printed out a few of the maps today and have been looking at satellite imagery and trying to pinpoint areas that look promising...

btw, i havent saw anywhere about hunting times. is Pa sunrise to sunset?

thanks for the help guys

Legal hunting hours for all small and big game in Pa. are from one- half hour before sunrise to one half hour after sunset.

I think the exact time for Saturday is 6:47 to 6:43, it is set up by the week, so Monday the start time is 6:54 to 6:34 for the week of Oct. 21 to 27.

just like Co, thanks

Just got back from the last hard pre-season workout. I like to give them a day off before the season starts, it's going to be a long haul from here on in. Somehow they know it's for real now. Can't wait to get through work tomorrow, then it's showtime!

Good luck everyone, and let us know how you make out!

I thought it opened next Saturday, I still have to get my license. Might hunt York-New Salem game land late Sat. afternoon after all the crazies leave.
