It is winding down

We have just about one week left in the early season. I took some time on Friday with all three dogs and things went well. The dogs had plenty of bird contacts with about 6 or 7 points. Only one of those points produced a rooster, the rest were hens except for the covey of quail. There were about 20 birds in this group and it always makes me smile when the dogs find them. The quail were located in a swampy area this time.

Nittany brought back the rooster:

Blitz was in deeper on the quail and I couldn't get a good picture of him.

Good luck to everybody during the last week. The weather looks good for the next several days and I'm looking forward to getting out. Hopefully Saturday goes well. I'll be taking out some guys who took Connor out for spring turkey over the past couple of years.

Unfortunately these seasons pass way to quickly. Champ has done very well in his first season and sure shows great promise for future seasons.

Where are you heading for grouse? " Not specific "

You should be proud looks like Champ really came along great this season. The seasons all go to fast..

Thanks for the comments. Champ is doing great and I am happy about that. I have noticed that Nittany is not as good as he once was. Champ and Blitz are on point sometimes and Nittany will just not pick up the scent. He's still pointing birds and making retrieves but at 11 years old he just isn't a young dog anymore. But he may still be a better tracker on a running bird and knows how to pace himself.

My grouse trip will be north of home. Considering I live along the Mason Dixon line that doesn't narrow things down. I haven't picked a place yet. I'm thinking of trying out some new places further north of the Raystown area.

"My grouse trip will be north of home."

Maybe you should run for political office! :D

I wouldn't make a good politician. I'd miss all the fall votes because I'd be out hunting.

I'll narrow down the location and keep in north of me in PA.

I want to check out some of the maps I have and then I'll decide where to go. I'll let you know how it goes.

We moved six birds today and I was able to take two. The two other guys with me didn't get a shot off today while walking with the dogs. Some birds were flushing long before the dogs or anybody got close. The last point from the dogs produced a doe and a nice buck.

We did hear some other shooting but I didn't see anybody else with birds. There were a few rabbit hunters out with some beagles.

bauerline, I think I saw you walking into the high grass NW of the pond near the parking lot off the gameland road around 930 today at an SGL in South Central Pa? I saw a young vizsla with a fluorescent collar like your dogs wear and some hunters walking in.

Yes, that was me. How did you do up there?

About the same as you did, put up 6 roosters; knocked down 2. Funniest part was when we jumped a young spike buck, he took off running and by now he might be in North Carolina the way he was running south!

I am going to be over in the Somerset area visiting my siblings this week, before going to deer camp near Clearfield. I know you said you hunt a preserve over there, but i was wondering if you have hunted any public land and how promising it might be?

Moved a few birds today when I went out with a friend. He had is daughter along and my boys and wife joined us. We were just hoping to find some birds for the kids to see and we were able to do that with a few shots fired at birds. No birds were harmed.

Today was my most productive grouse day to date but the bar has been set pretty low. I just took Blitz and Champ and at our first stop they worked a bird that ended up flushing wild at the edge of forest cut. We didn't move any more birds from this area and moved on. The second area is where Champ pointed his first grouse which I was able to see flush through the trees but it offered no shot.

There is a glimpse of orange in the picture that is Champ.

That was the end of our grouse encounters but I was happy with how the dogs worked. I stopped on the way home to see if we could find any pheasants. We ended up finding 12 roosters and 5 hens and I was able to take two of the roosters. It was a full day with 19 total birds worked.
