Is this over the top or is it just me?

Hey Bud,

I appreciate what you did for the guy wanting to get into birds in NE - the problem is that those spots (which I hunt also) are not that expansive - there are so many folks willing to drive from Denver/Front Range to hunt those spots 4hrs away - really the closest decent bird hunting to the metro area. In the future please keep these spots under your hat - you and I probably found good spots using boot leather and local knowledge. Your post is immortalized forever on a forum dedicated to pheasant hunting. It's not like it's a total secret, but I bet you'll have more company around Harlan res the next time you go. Those are the times that we live in my friend - just a friendly reminder - thanks!

The above is a Private message I received today regarding helping an out of state hunter get on some birds. Im not going to call him out by name but this is BS in my book. the hunter is from another state and I simply told him where there are good bird numbers on PUBLIC LAND. I guess to me its not just killing a bird its the whole hunt. the little diners on the corner serving some of the best meals a fella could ask for. a new location ect.... when i visit other places either fishing or hunting I love help from the locals. I'm only there for a short time and want to make the most of it.

Sorry to hear this has happened, again. In the past we had quite a heated discussion on this forum about the same issue, posting hunting spots online. While I personally would not post my hunting spots in an open forum, this is a free country and if you choose to do it that's your right. I do think that if you are going to share some spots with another hunter that it would be best to do it through a Private Message. That way it's not public and simply between you and the other party.

THis is good advice.

I would definitely side with the guy who PM'd you. If you had done that where I hunt the PM would not have been near as congenial.

If you think that's over the top here, try and do that over on a duck hunting forum. You might wind up with some fellers knocking on your door over there. I have heard it's such a big deal there that they will ban you from the forum for posting location services.

All that said it's been a few years back but somebody posted about how great the bird hunting had been at a wetlands area I usually hunt on opening weekend. The area is a couple of square miles. There are usually 20-30 guys there on opening day. After that post there was about 75 on opening day. So many that it bordered on being unsafe.

If you want to help a guy out with where to hunt great. That's up to you, you can share your hard work with him. It's simply more prudent to do so over PM so that you are helping him and not anyone out there googling where to hunt in Nebraska.

The post "where to hunt pheasants in Kansas 2016" got over 14,000 views last season.

I understand both sides of this conflict but I have to lean towards being in favor of the gentleman that PM'd you. I'm all about helping as well as the older I get the more I realize I'm not in a competition with others as much as I am with myself and the game I pursue. With that being said you have to hold that feeling/intent back when online. Many, and I'm not saying you, underestimate and/or have no idea how bad this can snowball. A pm may save you a headache. It may or may not be overcrowded where you hunt because of your post(which I did not see). The point is it can and will in many cases. I don't know exactly how bad this gets out west in regards to upland hunting but I do know what it does to lakes and the beaches up and down the east coast. Everyone thinks the beach is so big because it lines the ocean until someone posts a pic of a striper and location to go along with it. It shrinks drastically. It gets so bad you cant fish, literally. Guys are w____'s about this kind of info. They scour the net for just that with no intent of ever posting. There are posts that get 30k views on some of the fishing forums. Imagine 1/4 of them showing up to a particular beach...heck imagine 1/10. I'VE SEEN IT and its not fun one bit. When I saw this hapen, you were very lucky if you found a 50 yard stretch of open beach within a town north and a town south of the location posted. It's BAD, but still, I totally understand your intent of wanting to help. We just gotta be different about how we do in these times of; what happens online stays online. Its a new world. For personal and business I am involved with technology every day and although I prefer the "old days" before this era, it's best to accept and learn the do's and dont's rather than fight them.

Come on--

It's a well known public hunting area--

He was just tying to help out a new person

Some of you sound like --the snowflakes on campus and the news that "NEED A SAFE PLACE'

That's just my opinion --fire away--

BUT PLEASE DON'T LET ANYONE KNOW THAT THERE ARE PHEASANTS IN SOUTH DAKOTA: ESPECIALLY IN THE WINNER OR GETTYSBURG ARE WHERE I HUNT:eek::rolleyes:

This site is dead right now; not a lot of damage done to this point. You can always edit your post. I think it's fine to say try southwest Nebraska. When you start mentioning towns, it frustrating. This is why:

In the late 90s, I was shooting two roosters a day at a conservation area. It was a hard days hunt. Walked 1.5 miles away from the parking lot before hunting seriously. The area was mentioned in Missouri's Conservation magazine and the area was packed. Never the same after that. Didn't hunt it last year.

It took years to find good hunting spots in Kansas. Somedays hardly hunted, just drove. Sometimes some speeding jerk would pass me on a little road to beat me to an area. Not fun. Now I hunt areas I know and when tired look for new areas. Go to all that effort and then it's mentioned online.

Prefer you use PM.

If I am not mistaking, you are guiding in South Dakota. It is self-serving for you to mention areas in South Dakota.
