been researching montana lots even pm a few guys that are always talking in the montana forum just trying to get a starting point for a weeks hunt hear the ne is the best

coming up

more than a few times i have hunted dove in wheat stubble and sometimes when they are on the ground feeding, the dogs will actually get to point them. i also do some snipe hunting, they don't much like the dog either but most everyday they will nail one or two. same with the blue grouse that starts here in sept. they don't much care for a dog either, they often will walk around in front of the dog driving it crazy, dog usually breaks, for me, those are the first one's up so that's what i will be doing and i hope i am wrong, but maybe that's all i will get to shoot at besides some duck

cheers

I really wanted to go this year but I won't have the leave time to go. Was really wanting to get the pups a bunch of bird contacts. But, even next year would be good for them.

I do plan to hopefully make it to the sandhills at least a couple of times this year. Do you remember who it was in the Nebraska forum last year that made a few trips up there? He posted a nice report when he got back. He may have been from Colorado. May be able to find the post too. Haven't looked yet.

OAP I do remember the looking at the video. Also could have swore the EP was on birds constantly and the setters were just running around sight seeing and rolling in cow dung.

Of course my memory may be a little blurred as well.

Yes, I too am getting the itch. Been seeing some dove fly around in the evenings and emailing back and forth with a group of friends from NC about our November plans. Gotta make time to shoot clays with the boys soon....maybe that's what I'll do this evening:thumbsup:

Yeah speaking of doves I've been seeing a bunch use my pond out back to water.

Any Eurasian Collared doves? I ask b/c I managed to harvest a couple last year. They taste like the smaller mourning dove, but the breast is about as big as a quail. I'm going to target them after I shoot my 15 on the opener....that is, if Wal-mart has enough ammo left by the time I hit # 15:eek:

I'm sure the boys and I will hunt our traditional opening day spot with the hoards of other ppl on our favorite public parcel. The first 2 years I nearly stayed in my truck/found another place to hunt. However, after the morning assault, many folks leave the field and the commoraderie (sp?) begins. We've met some pretty decent ppl doing it and it's fun to see so many doves, so many misses, hear so much colorful language, and see several different kinds of dogs being used. I also like seeing the game warden and hearing his stories about hunters, wildlife, and habitat projects. In fact, last year we heard a story from a young enforcement officer who'd been planting on public land, only to have the equipment he was on catch fire. Later that fall (December) we were hunting that area and saw the burnt-up equipment and the half-finished project. The boys and I got a great laugh while we were standing there looking at the carnage and recounting the story from the young biologist;) Shortly thereafter we flushed 2 hens and 1 rooster. We didn't even take a shot. We just watched them fly away knowing that moment may not have been possible if not for the efforts of the state and the young man who was gracious enough to share his story.

We also plan on hunting doves out W at dad's place. It's feast or famine out there. Either you're in 'em so thick ya don't know which way to shoot or there just aren't any....either way we've learned to enjoy ourselves and make the most out of every adventure:thumbsup:

I too have been seeing dove all over the place. Seeing some Eurasian dove as well, in fact two are living in the trees behind the house and coming to the bird feeder quite often. I really got into dove hunting last season, went more and shot more dove than any other year. Took my two little ones with me almost every trip. Figured out Momma doesn't care how much I hunt as long as I got the little ones with me. Got two mojo dove decoys and those things are awesome. Bought a new 20 gauge over/under two weeks ago and I think the thing is going to be pretty deadly on the dove! Nothing shooting dove in the morning, grilling them for lunch with a couple cold ones and college football on the TV.

Looking forward to bagging a few doves on 9/1. Rest of the Kansas season looks bleak.

My co-worker is on vacation in south dakota. Texted me to tell me how high the corn was along I-90 west of the river. Said ditches were hayed with bales all over. Grass that is left is very tall. I asked him if he saw any birds, but he is not a hunter and probably wouldn't know where to look anyway. That was enough to get me going a little today. Work is always a grind this time of year.
