Bingo! The cardinal rule of gun handling can be summed-up in the letters KAO= KEEP ACTION OPEN. I do not close the action on a pump gun until I have the gun pointed at my intended target! When using the Benelli auto-banger, I do use the safety but before meeting back up with my party, I point the gun in a safe direction, remove my chambered round and lodge it sideways in the action so it is cleary visible when REDDOG takes a look. Anyone who has ever owned a pre-X Block 600 or 700 Remington knows that a "safety" is anything but!
 
OK, here's one for you guys. Since it's legal to carry an uncased, loaded gun in your vehicle in some states (like SD), does anyone actually do this? I don't think I could ever get comfortable doing it but I'm wondering if others do it, and why?

uncased yes...loaded never. loaded only when in the field. any other time....open, empty chamber.
 
What do you do when you top a hill and realize you don't have a field to yourself? There is another hunter who is hunting the same field only from a different direction, no possible way for either of you to know the other was there beforehand.

I have had this happen, and a pleasant conversation resulted in us deciding where we had been and a strategy to work the rest of the field together. made the most of the situation.
