Hunting buddies shagged on me

Little frustrated, my buddies bailed on me for me trip this week. Now I am trying to decide to go up solo or not. Don't mind hunting solo, just gets kind of expensive from here.

Sorry to hear!!!! If you can afford it go!!! If not wait till weather turns a little and go no matter what!!!!

If you'd like, you can PM me where you'll be and when next week. I may be able to meet up with you for a few days, but that's about all I can offer. You can thank Obama for my lack of "bird hunting capital". :D

Go solo!!! My buddy pulled the same stunt on me a few weeks ago. I wasn't about to not go just because he got a sudden case of wussy-itis. I went by myself for three days and had the time of my life. I enjoy being on the prairie with just me and my dog. You can hunt at your own pace, and it is a hell of a lot easier to make a decision with one person instead of two. And some of the really cool things you see, you just get to keep to yourself.

use the small vehicle that gets real good gas mileage- drive well under the speed limit- cook up some food ahead of time- you can find some towns that have real reasonable rates- sort of not the classy motels- but they'll do- got a 20 below sleeping bag? can do with sleeping in a car sometimes

sometimes a solo hunt can be the best- carry a camera

I agree, solo hunts are great. I do them time to time. But, I will pass on this trip and wait for better conditions for the dog. The $400 bucks in fuel plus hotels is just a little more than I want to fork out right now. I have done the sleeping in the truck thing as well, just the truck is about 6" to narrow, and I don't have a cap on the back.

What type of ground & how do you hunt when you go out solo?

I enjoy hunting with buddies most of the year, but one trip a year it's just me. This weekend it'll be just me and my two dogs out in Southwest Kansas on some family ground. I tend to let the dogs run a little bigger when I'm by myself. The weather looks good for this weekend and I can't wait to head West!

Probably the same places people in groups hunt, except for cut fields. Favorite to hunt is corners if I can get permission on private land. But even in the WIHA I have had success. I hunt a lab, and she makes a superb flush dog, so that helps out with my chances of getting birds in the air. I'm one of them non-resident folks, so a pheasant hunt for me is a long drive and nights in hotels, so bout once a year is all I get to go. Come to think of it, I have hunted with other people only once and for sure didn't bring home any more birds or have more fun. They hauled us around in a gooseneck and dropped us off at certain locations. Not my thing. I wouldn't mind going with one or two other guys, just to have someone to talk to, but dumping 15-20 people out on the same piece of ground is not my way of doing it.

Hit up priceline.com and you can find some very cheap rates on descent hotels. We just stayed at the Super 8 in Wakeeney for 50 bucks a night! can't beat that. They have a bird cleaning room, breakfast, internet, and they let the dogs in for free!! And lilke they said cook up some soup or chilli before, take the crockpot with ya and warm them up. There are some great crockpot recipies that you can start when ya leave for the day and when ya get back they are ready and warm for ya!! good luck!

Any luck around the Wakeeney area? Seems to be mixed results on here. We were in Norton opening weekend (60 miles north of Wakeeney). Not a lot of birds.

I go by myself all the time. I can't find anyone to go other than my wife and she has to work some time so I can go hunting!!
Seriously though, I hunt by myself all of the time, just me and my girls. I have a nice place that I stay that is reasonably priced and I cook my own food.
I don't need the companionship of others, I have my girls and I have a great time.
I usually hunt smaller CRP field, draws and other things that larger groups bypass.
