Hunting around Ennis

Hey guys I just wanted to get an idea of hunting opportunities for pheasants, sharpies, and huns around Ennis. It seems my brother has married into a family that has 3 working farm/ ranches along the river in Ennis. We are thinking about heading that way next years as they told us they have quite a few "chickens" and even though they aren't bird hunters they leave a little feed and cover around to get the birds through winter. Is this a good area for birds generally? Any help would be appreciated.

After looking at Montana's fwp website it definitely looks like it is not a premier area for pheasant hunting but the do harvest some pheasants and huns in Madison Co. I think they farm/ ranch on a few thousand acres and their farm ground is all along the river and they have ground enrolled in crp. Who knows if nothing else we have a place to stop over for the night and get a good meal.

Sounds like something to check out. My guess is the "chickens" is sharptail.
But bottom ground with heavy cover will likely have some pheasants.

Ennis is along the Madison River, bring Your trout Fishing gear.:) The ranches along the River probably irrigate, if there's farming and cover there should be pheasants, Sharptail and Huns. Sharptail and Sage Grouse will be in the rolling sage between the mountains.
Mountain Grouse should be good too in the foothills and forests.

Yeah! I would say Ennis would be a good destination, check it out.

I automatically thought waterfowl! River+farm ground+moving water to keep it open in cold weather. Can u say mallard hunt!

I've actually never been on a waterfowl hunt though JP has helped other hunters track down a few crippled mallards. I wouldn't even know where to begging unless I was just pass shooting.

Robert,

Don't go there. LOL. You will start down a path that will bankrupt you. Decoys, bigger truck and trailer to haul decoys and, kites, blinds, and calls, and it never ends. LOL,:D it truely is and addiction. LOL

I kill all the Mallards I want by pass shooting and jump shooting.
Don't have time to mess with decoys.
Don't think the Madison is all that famous for duck hunting.
Downstream where the 3 rivers form the Missouri is some dang good duck country.

I am not sure on the bird hunting as that is clear across our little state of Montana from where I call home...however, I think I would be putting in for a deer/and or elk tag for 2013!!! That should be some awesome big game hunting area.

decent hun hunting, probably some sharptails close by too. the pheasant huniting would be marginal, in the riparian area close to the madison, and Ennis MIGHT find a few birds, but in 30 years in the area havent seen one pheasant off the road in that region.

Mountains full of grouse if you are interested in them, and yes to deer elk opportunities!

Make it a stop on your way north or east for pheasants

Thanks for the info. I'm definitely interested in the mountain grouse. Sounds like a stop in is in order next season.

Ruffs, blues and spruce grouse from what I gather.
