Hunted some really thick CREP.

This is the 3rd year for this planting and it got timely rains. 60 yards apart and I couldn't see my hunting partner. The 3 weims were impossible to keep track of. Lost 1 dog for 10 minutes and again later for 45 minutes. Thing is we only hunted a hour. We did scratch out 5 nice roosters. At least 2 were older birds.

Going to run gps next time out. 550+ will be a big help. We had good success in this public ground late last year. Need snow to make it a little easier to walk.

Have a friend who hunts this same piece but he is only 5'6" and has trouble walking. I am going to have to tell him save your gas money that piece will be impossible for you.

I hunted a piece of public several years ago south of me. It must have be a mono stand of big bluestem...maybe it was Johnson grass. My buddy had no idea where his dog was the entire walk....I had no idea where my buddy was. I had the bell on, but still the cover was so tall when a bird got up you could only see if for a moment as they stayed low. Never went back there, a good sanctuary for them!

What state were you in? Empty bio.

I was hunting some over my head grass about 10 years ago. The dogs kept coming back to check in. I could hear them coming back through the grass before I could see them. Thought I heard them coming back again, but that time it was a 6 point buck. Hit me in the shoulder, ripped off my hunting vest. So lucky it wasn’t a straight on hit!

There are definitely some areas of SD that got rain at just the right time for the cover to go bonkers. I've been on a couple of CREP spots where the bluestem was above my head and I'm 6'1". Been on a few where it's the normal waist-high as well, (but plenty thick) so I guess it just depends on location.

My last hunt, and I mean probably the final hunt for both me and my dog, I was walking the edge of some very thick CRP. Bree got out into it a ways and when I looked at my Garmin Alpha I saw she was 60+ yards to my right an stopped. So I headed out in her direction, when I got within 20 or so yards of her she started moving, After she got another 60+ yards from me she stopped again. So i moved in getting closer and closer but still unable to see Bree. As I got closer a rooster flushed and down he went. I waited a few seconds and here comes Bree delivering that bird to me. I never did see her until she was bringing the bird. If that in fact is Bree and my last hunt it will be a great memory to end on.
