How often...

How often to you get your dogs out for a run during the off season?

Do you do any training, if so how often?

For me I get the dogs out about 2 times a week, usually Sat and Sunday.

I would like to get my dogs both fully broke (still standing there after I have shot and killed a bird). So I will be doing some training every week.

I try to do atleast 30 minutes of training every day ..sometimes weather dictates that though. However my dogs are on birds almost year round - After regular hunting season starts the tournament hunting season and after that starts trial and hunt test season. The reason I do the tournament and trial/test season is really to just extend the hunting and learning for my dogs. It is great..the only months the dogs aren't on birds is usually june, july and august and at that time they are having plenty of fun swimming in the lakes and rivers.

I try to work on something in the yard daily. We take a hike on the training grounds at least once on weekends (until the Rattlers appear, which might be early this year). Then we head-out to snake-free areas every couple weekends, chores permitting. Apart from that, Hank goes with me everywhere I can possibly take him . . . we have established a very tight bond.

My dogs are on vacation until April. We'll be running 2-3X a week once the weather gets nicer.

Everyday. Unless I have something going on. Weather be damned.
I need the exercise. Then I come home and take care of the racing pigeon team.

Unless it is raining. My crew is pretty miserable in the rain and they don't hesitate to show it.

Training, is a different story. They are all beyond pigeons it seems and quail are hard to come by, so right now, it's just free run and play time.

And besides, when I run them, they poop in the field I run in, so it's less poop in the backyard, which means less poop I'm picking up.

As much as I can, but usually twice a week until March 15-Aug 15. During that time I take them swimming once a week. You can't run dogs on public ground in Iowa in that March to Aug period. The main reason I moved so the dogs had places to run and chase pheasants.

Everyday, twice. Granted I have 13 acres plus neighbors crop ground when harvested. I have swimming pond(3 season)also. The outings today will be short with -30 wind chills.

Once season is over in mid Feb. we hit every NAVHD, NSTRA and local club event we can. We train and exercise daily once the snow melts we head to the mountain to hike fish and explore. The more exposure the better.
