How Much to Exercise a Puppy

I am now the proud father of a 11 week old Brittany, and I couldn't be happier.

One question I have is about exercise, I live in town and have to take him on walks to exercise. My vet said that it was okay to take him out on walks if he stays on the sidewalk and out of areas with feces - anyway I'm not here to debate that, my question is about exercise. How much is too much? I read that you can hurt them by exercising too much if they are less than a year old, but I'd like to use a good walk or light jog to get some of that puppy energy out of him.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

Is a mile walk too long? - A mile jog?

Thanks

a mile anything is to much for an 11 week old pup take it slow walk three or four blocks let him tucker himself out you will know when he gets tired

jog ,whats that?:D , just tahe it eazy for now,he will run the stuff out of you latter.
my 7 mo old gsp goes for a run of 1-2 miles afew times a day but not me i ride along side in the golf cart:eek:

I would err on the side of caution. Their bones are growing rapidly and injury should be avoided. I have a 7 month old and I only walk him about 3/4 of a mile every other day. He gets plenty of exercise running around our 2 acre fenced area, wrastlin' with his older brother and swimming. We make sure he gets a mid-day nap in too.

Give him time. He's young.

BTW- a walk is the perfect time to exercise recall commands.

My vet told me not to worry about our springer when she was a pup. I guess mainly based on her size (larger dogs seem to have to worry more about growth plates and all that). She said feel free to exercise her as much as she'll take/wants. granted, I wasn't out roading her or anything like that, but I was taking her for lots of walks. Your pup will tell you when he/she's tired usually. When we went out on hikes with friends and their dogs she ran her little heart out, and would just be lazy for a day or so after. Just learn to read him/her. Lots of leash walks will be fine for both of you I would think. Consider it some training without the formal training part. we would work on sit at the corners of intersections, whistle sits, etc... good luck. and have a fun!

**just re-read that the pup's only 11 weeks. Yeah, take your time. at that age I think we walked around the block a couple times, that was about it. we's do that more than a few times a day, but almost every other time in between, pup was sleeping the day away. At that age, more time is spent sleeping that anything. Wait till those shots all kick in before venturing too far so the pup is safe from getting sick too.

I have taken Gunne to a open hunting field since he was 10 weks old. I started letting him Run and Play every day possible about 15-20 mintues. Now when he runs with Tony his runs are about 30 minutes. My vet told me quote, "Good for you are doing you and your dogs a lot of good." Gunne will be 8 months old in 3 days. He has been running 30 minutes since late May.........Bob

12 weeks today,

I don't know, he must have super energy, I take him for a 6 block walk every morning before work and I do whatever I can to exercise him for a half hour at noon, then when I come home from work at 5 we go for another walk, and we have gone probably up to a half mile and he is still chomping at the bit for more, but I don't want to overdo it, so we go inside or to the yard a play for awhile and he still won't fall asleep till probably 9 or 10 at night.

I know he will have more energy cooped up all day, and I want to help him expend it, but I'm afraid I will be hurting him in the long run. I just want him to be calm inside so we can work on all the calm things we need him to be doing on a daily basis.

btw... On the weekends we are outside a good portion of each day out at the farm and he does a lot of free running exercise and more napping there - wish I lived there all week!

just remember, it just a pup... my pup has more energy than i can take... just gotta be patience, the pup's engery will wear off into a older dog habit til hunting comes around, then look out for the hyper in the dog.
