How many more hunts?

Every weekend, whatever days in-between that I can squeeze-in, and then a couple weeks of vacation-worth . . . or more.

Already took a grouse trip, MI pheasant trip, and a ND pheasant trip.

Firearm season here in MI starts in a couple days, so I won't be getting back at it until our December season. Probably have 1-2 day/weekend trips for both grouse and pheasant yet, but the best has past. Time flies when you're having fun!

This is one of the top 10 reasons I'm thankful every day for being blessed with the opportunity to live where I do now. I'm within a 5 mile radius of several good public spots (in SD). I rent a great place way out in the country; I don't own any land. Can hunt rabbit, doe and varmint on landlord's land but gotta leave his birds and big antlers alone. Doesn't bother me at all....the public areas are SO close by & they get very little traffic from about mid November onward! Much of the time I have the fields to myself :)

So I'm perfectly happy being able to hunt.....well, whenever I have any excuse to do so! Whenever the mood strikes. Whenever I have a free afternoon. Whenever the weather changes. When I need to make sure the gun still works. When the pheasants start mocking me as I drive by. When my dog is antsy/on the brink of stealing the gun & truck herself. Etc. You get the idea. :)

I'm a lousy shot so I don't get near as many birds as one might think. I'm probably downright pitiful compared to most of you, but I'm getting better slowly. Luckily I'm most passionate about working my dog; she's passionate for the hunt AND patient with my shooting....so even empty handed we go home happy.

Definitely going to be in the field tomorrow & over the weekend....hopefully this incoming icky weather will make the birds cooperate, we'll see.

And I'll have some company here Thanksgiving week & the week after.....just two people but I'll actually have someone to hunt with me! It'll be my mom next week and one of mine & hubby's best friends the following week. Mom's not a hunter but she wants to come with me since she loves the outdoors, solitude, beauty, etc. Friend LOVES hunting but has never been pheasant hunting....we are both SUPER excited about his visit for sure :)

It'll be nice not to be hunting alone for a little while- not that I mind it but good company can't be beat either :)

Just got the OK from the spouse to head out again next week. Not sure if it will be a long run or not into Soutwest MN, but that's one more wild bird hunt, a game farm and one more wild bird hunt after that if my buddy ever finishes hunting whitetails.

And since I'm going over the river and through the woods for turkey day, I might as well bring along the pups for some grouse hunting south of Duluth!

It's just getting funner and funner!

With my line of work & recent run of family woes, can never really tell much ahead of time - I'm a bump & run kind of guy whenever I see a shot of opportunity! I live 2 1/2 - 3 hrs from the nearest edge of prime pheasant turf & 90% of my phez chasin consists of long day runs which begin with me rollin @ 4 a.m. to hunt from legal shooting light till late in the aft and arrive back home around 8-9 p.m. (partial-day hunts are not worth all the $$$ involved & a 3 hr ride on both ends). Usually only manage to squeak in a couple overniter/multi-day hunts per yr (one of which I already WASTED on the opener this wknd - except for the opening day comraderie & subsequent wide-swath pre-scouting run which was not a waste at all & should pay off handsomely for the remainder of the season).

My Goal is ALWAYS to get out an average of one day per week throughout the season - the closest I got to that during my past 2010 personal "hell-year" was a total of two times period. Looks like God is smiling on me this yr & the stars are lining up, as I now have a 2nd opportunity to get out already (& a 2nd overniter trip at that) on Mon & Tues of next wk just prior to leaving for TX on Thanksgiving. After that I will not be able to hunt at all until mid-Dec due to international missionary travel & work, then it's back to TX w/fam for Christmas & NY's. I do plan on sticking around close to home travel-wise & hitting it hard at least one day per week throughout Jan w/maybe one more grand-finale overniter somewhere near season's close on the 31st.

We'll see how it all pans out...Would love to live much closer to rooster heaven where I could pop out several mornings and/or evenings a week throughout the season - but hey I'm not complaining, prior to the last 4 1/2 yrs livin in Denver, CO I have spent most of my 50+ yrs on earth living so far away from pheasant country that it was a once a yr pilgrimage at best!

As often as possible

I got up early this morning as the forecast was for snow and cold. Windchill was zero. The first snow is always good, as you can catch them in the roost nd they tend to hold (we can shot at 1/2 hr before sunrise). I hunted 1.5 hours, killed two and missed one and saw many more, all within a 30 minute drive of the house. A great way to start the day!

Off to hunt deer and elk with the "gang" at "deer/beer camp" Always a good time and sometimes we even fill a tag or two. The same crew for the last 14 years at a remote cabin but it has electric/woodstove/running water. Life is good!

After that probably one or two 3 days trips before the season closes and several partial days close to home.

Just getting started!

I fished hard till mid October with the amazing weather we had. Fish were eating Hoppers till then. Hunting so far I have logged 6 days of rooster shooting in Idaho and 1 mallard shoot in the corn in Utah. I will hunt Nebraska for roosters 10-12 days between now and the end of January. Then I will hunt mallards in the corn here at home in Utah as often as possible from now till seasons end in mid January. I'm not much for early season hunting. Bring on the Late season, things are just starting to get good!

JS, you're probably cool until she's got to shovel the snow (and chop away the hard stuff in the tracks you left behind when you took the hunting rig out ``one more time.'') :D

JSD, be very careful of those finely crafted trick-words "It's fine" & "I don't care" - a woman's words are NEVER to be taken at face value (that would be way too easy), especially if it's @ or anywhere near Christmas-time! Don't ask me how I know... :D :p

I was STUPID enough ONE TIME back in younger days to buy hook, line & sinker into "It's fine, I don't mind" for an opening day deer hunt on our anniversary. Yeah like I said, STUPID (& who could blame the poor woman)...
