How about some tips

Dont know about your part of Mo but up here around Lake of Ozarks people are rude as any state. I am a former Kansas Wildcat (jayhawks are well I cant tell you without getting booted off here) I always stopped to help people. You just ran acrossed Ks 1 bad apple. Question for all. Why own a 4 wheel drive and only put hiway tread on? all you do is get stuck twice as bad. Atleast put some ATs on. My trucks all sport more agressive tread. Maybe it is the Kansas coming out in me.

I hate to say it but I have to agree with jrice. Some of the rudest people I've met are in rural Kansas. Just go in to any small town greasy spoon and try to start a conversation and see how far it gets you. Anyway heres my tip, when hunting a large tract of crp with only a couple of guys section off the corners and push them out to the road. Sometimes you can cut off the runners and flush them close.

Actually I am very near you. There seems to be a concentration of people in that area from Kansas City and St. Louis therefor not a fair representation of the ethics of people in this area. By the way I noticed you say you are from Kansas, but moved to God's county-Mo! That says something now doesn't it. Just kidding, sorry for hijacking this thread but not helping someone in need is not the way we should be and is a major problem in society.

I think they get sick of hunters driving on muddy roads when they feel they should know better

This is pretty much the reason my friend charges $50. He farms adjacent to Tuttle Creek, just minutes away from a college town and a military base. It seems every jacknut with a 4X4 wants to joyride around and gets their truck stuck to the frame in goo. Then they expect him to abandon his farm chores and bail them out. If this was a weekly occurrence on your farm, I guarantee anybody on this board would start charging too. I also guarantee you wouldn't put up with any crappy attitudes from the person you're trying to help. (My comments are not directed at Fenway. Using "you" as a generalization for anybody reading.)

I think the $50 is a "stupid fee" that people should happily pay when they do something really stupid and it turns out about how they should have expected it to all along...

Is this behavior unfriendly or rude? I don't think so. I think it is a lot more friendly than just driving past them. It's one thing to blow a tire or have a mechanical breakdown. It is entirely a different situation when you are "testing your truck's limits" and get stuck in the mud. An accidental breakdown will get you sympathy and free help from just about any Kansan I've ever met. The second situation won't get you any sympathy from the local farmer and makes all of us hunters look bad in the eyes of landowners.

Just my .02

Non takin, I was trying to tell of our experience last year. We went in Jan. just when it finally warmed up and the snow was melting, many of the side roads had just been opened and the farmer warned us to get off the roads after they thaw, one day we didn't listen almost got stuck allot.

It's not easy taking heed to warnings when the roosters are cackling!

Huskerfan and others, too bad you feel that rural Kansans are rude. I just returned from central KS last week and had great conversations at the local "greasy spoon". I was inquiring about RV parks or hook ups and they gave me many names and numbers of the locals that had a hookup at their house. Later that day, while suffering from a major headache, I realized I had no aspirin (maybe this is a tip as well; carry aspirin). I stopped by the nearest grain elevator as it had a small store. Asked the gentleman behind the counter if they had aspirin for sale. Nope, but he went to the back and gave me a handful from their stash. Very kind.

Now these same people do not care for the plates with JO or SG.

I was really generalizing people in that part of the world. I have met some outstanding people in KS. One in particular around Greensburg, he was a great help, let us hunt a few spots and a real good guy. I'm sure getting knocks on the door with people looking for a place to hunt gets old. In fact I will not hardly attempt it anymore. The last time I stopped to ask permision the older gentleman said he had family coming in. Totally understood told him thanks, he kept apologizing like he owed it to me. I told him no problem, and really felt uncomfortable that I may have put him in a tough situation. I grew up on a farm and know this if you let one person somehow you have given permission to him, his uncle and brothers, cousins, and everyone else they know. I completely understand the frustration. Just as I shouldn't lump all Kansans together it would be nice not to get lumped in with the poachers and road hunters. I hunt from daylight to dark, hunt all the cover and am very appreciative that I can hunt WIHA land. And the best part is its FREE! By the way, in my part of mo there is virtually no access. All the big farms are split into 5 acre hobby farms. I am very grateful Kansas has WIHA acres, one of the only things they have gotten right. ha ha GO MIZZOU!!

Listen to this guy from Misery running down KS! Ohhhh, I've got so many bad things to say about Misery, starting with their crappy highways, one-toothed hillbillies, and St. Louis (there's a biggy that I'd be ashamed of).........as fun as this could be, I'd better stop and get back to work. Ya'll will probably be asking Kansas for a loan soon so your portion of I-70 doesn't turn back to gravel or dirt. The "Blow Me" state can do just that........

Looks like we'd better start a state bashing thread b/c I know you sillbillies will come out of the woodwork now:eek::rolleyes::D

Haha KB I'm glad I'm not the only one who calls it "Misery" lol, my mom is from that unfortunate state, needless to say she LOVES it when I give her a hard time ;)

Yeah, I've spent a lot of time in Misery myself and must admit, I kinda like it....not nearly as much as KS, which is why I'm still here, but I don't wish bad for any state except a couple on the coasts! Midwest states should remain united, but we can have some fun w/ each other from time to time.

Speaking of adjacent states...

I gotta admit, Nebraskans are classy bunch. Just spent a few hours with a few thousand of them while their football team was spanking my beloved Wildcats. Not one peep of nasty, foul-mouthed behavior before or after the game. Any trash talk before the game was good-natured and positive.

Colorado and Mizzou fans on the other hand...

i grew up there and graduated from NU, that is how most of our fans are, good people and knowledgeable football fans......Texas and OU will be a handful for us, we haven't really been tested yet.....

There ya go. NE is my favorite bordering state. I think that state has more in common with KS than OK, CO, or MO.

I managed a business in Lincoln- middle 70's- boy were they big on displaying red- seems the whole city turned red- especally before a KU game
