Hello Everyone

I retired from the Army a few years ago and am attending Kansas State University with the goal of becoming a Biology Teacher. I lived in Kansas as a boy and it was also my first duty station in 1985. I remember the great pheasant hunting from back then, but can't seem to find the birds in the Manhattan area or within an hour drive. I would like to get a few pointers and maybe find a couple of new hunting partners.
I went out on Wednesday just north of Wakeeny and got into the birds. I have a one year old lab that is in the process of learning. We hunted alone all day and kicked up 25 to 30 birds, with most flushing at least 100 yards out. Missed one old bird and got one. I need to put another 20-30 down in front of my pup in order for her to really get the idea of what we are trying to do. She hunts and stays within 15 yards and is really interested, but is not to sure what we are after. She had a hen get up under her chin on Wednesday and I think that she was confused when I did not shoot it.
I am looking forward to hearing from everyone and reading your posts.

A vet and a soon-to-be biology teacher, you're already on my favorites list! Welcome to the forum.

Thrasher,

Welcome to UPH. Thanks for your service to our country and good luck on your new carreer.

Thanks for the Welcome

Thanks for the welcome.
I can't wait for it to cool down with a little snow on the ground. Last Wednesday when I went out it was 66 degrees and seemed hotter then that. We still found birds, but they might have held closer if it were colder.
I am enjoying reading the reports and looking at pictures.
Here is a picture of Molly's first pheasant. http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hpho...365790803_1306583339_33129989_206867424_n.jpg She is young, but is picking it up pretty well.
