I was a bit shocked as well. Hunted yesterday on 5 WIHA's. Saw 4 roosters and 4 hens total. I managed to take all 3 roosters I shot at. I wouldn't call the day hard, it was just lacking in numbers. I really don't know how to get young dogs on their first points when the bird contacts are this low. UGH!

That's the problem were having with my dads young shorthair. I love our labs but some of the birds this year I believe the shorthair found as the labs hunted past them.
 
I don't get how that is the case with closer working, slower labs versus the short hairs???? Working cover with a lab may be slower and more tedious, but has always seemed to produce more consistently.

I agree. But just having no snow and 38^ out in December doesn't help labs. But time and place for both dogs.
